Organised labour, represented by the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa), has voiced profound concern over the escalating inequality and economic hardship afflicting the African continent. On the occasion of International Workers' Day, ITUC-Africa issued a stark warning about a deepening imbalance in wealth distribution, where economic benefits are increasingly concentrated among a select few, while a vast majority of workers grapple with soaring living costs and diminishing opportunities across many nations.

Akhator Joel Odigie, the General Secretary of ITUC-Africa, attributed this dire situation to entrenched structural economic challenges. These include pervasive corruption risks, significant illicit financial flows, and notable weaknesses in fiscal accountability within various jurisdictions. The labour body highlighted that substantial financial resources are lost annually through detrimental practices such as tax avoidance, capital flight, and systemic governance gaps. These funds, it argued, could otherwise be vital for bolstering public services, developing essential infrastructure, and fostering job creation initiatives.

Workers across several African countries continue to face immense pressure from high unemployment rates, persistent inflationary trends, and a contraction of economic prospects. In response, there is a growing clamour for improved governance and accountability from citizens. ITUC-Africa also sharply criticized austerity-focused economic policies, which it believes disproportionately burden workers through wage constraints and severe reductions in critical public services. Instead, the organization advocated for comprehensive improvements to tax systems, more robust financial oversight, and stringent measures to curb illicit financial outflows from the continent.

Further exacerbating the challenges, ITUC-Africa expressed deep apprehension regarding ongoing socio-political tensions and active conflicts in various African regions, including Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mali. These conflicts, it noted, relentlessly disrupt livelihoods and destabilize existing labour systems, adding another layer of complexity to the continent's economic woes.

Despite these formidable challenges, the labour group identified emerging opportunities, particularly those stemming from the global demand for critical minerals essential for energy transition technologies. ITUC-Africa urged African governments to strategically prioritize industrial development, emphasize value addition to raw materials, and actively promote regional trade, moving away from a primary reliance on raw material exports. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) was highlighted as a pivotal framework capable of strengthening intra-African trade and generating significant employment opportunities through the establishment of robust regional value chains.

In its comprehensive statement, ITUC-Africa called for expanded investment in vital energy infrastructure, the establishment of more effective social protection systems, the enforcement of stronger labour rights, and the implementation of fair migration policies. The organization issued a cautionary note that continued inequality could accelerate the migration of skilled labour from the continent, further hindering development. To counteract these trends and advance worker interests, ITUC-Africa implored workers and trade unions to maintain strong organization and active engagement in advocating for accountability and reforms, underscoring that collective action remains paramount.

As Africa observes International Workers' Day, ITUC-Africa firmly asserted that addressing entrenched inequality and fortifying governance systems are absolutely critical for ensuring inclusive and sustainable economic growth across the entirety of the continent.
