Africa's AI Future: Cassava Technologies & NVIDIA Team Up for Landmark Factory

Cassava Technologies, a leading provider of digital services and infrastructure, has unveiled ambitious plans to construct Africa's first Artificial Intelligence (AI) factory. This monumental initiative, revealed in a statement seen by Technext, aims to revolutionize the continent's digital landscape by providing African businesses, governments, and researchers with cutting-edge AI computing capacity. The primary goal is to empower them to develop smarter AI products, streamline operations, and maintain competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global technological environment.
Scheduled for completion by June 2025, the facility will function as a powerful and super-secure data centre, distinguished by its reliance on advanced NVIDIA AI computing technology. This collaboration with NVIDIA is central to the project, as Cassava Technologies plans to deploy NVIDIA accelerated computing and AI software, utilizing NVIDIA Cloud Partner (NCP) reference architectures. Initially, these robust systems will be implemented at Cassava's data centres in South Africa, with subsequent expansion planned for other key facilities across Africa, including Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, and Nigeria.
Strive Masiyiwa, Founder and Chairman of Cassava Technologies, emphasized the strategic importance of this development, stating that building the digital infrastructure for the AI economy is paramount for Africa to fully harness the potential of the fourth industrial revolution. Masiyiwa articulated that the AI Factory will furnish the essential infrastructure for innovation to scale, allowing African businesses, startups, and researchers to transform their audacious ideas into significant real-world breakthroughs, all without needing to seek resources beyond the continent's borders. This undertaking reinforces Cassava's established leadership in delivering world-class digital solutions and its broader commitment to responsible AI adoption, innovation, and productivity growth throughout Africa.
The Cassava AI Factory is meticulously designed to leverage the company’s extensive pan-African high-speed, ultra-low-latency fibre-optic network, alongside its sustainable and energy-efficient data centres. At the core of the factory's capabilities will be NVIDIA GPU-based supercomputers, engineered to enable faster AI model training, sophisticated fine-tuning, and advanced inference. Cassava aims to be the pioneering entity to introduce these accelerated computing platforms to Africa as an NCP, thereby playing a crucial role in shaping the continent’s burgeoning AI ecosystem.
Jaap Zuiderveld, Vice President of EMEA at NVIDIA, expressed the company's pride in partnering with Cassava Technologies. He highlighted how AI is already instrumental in helping innovators address significant challenges across diverse sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, energy, and financial services, creating substantial opportunities in Africa. Strive Masiyiwa further elaborated on the benefits of the Cassava AI Factory, assuring that businesses and researchers will gain access to the vital AI computing power required to scale operations, significantly boost productivity, and ignite innovation.
