A Hero's Farewell: Nigeria Mourns Imam Abdullahi, Champion of Interfaith Peace

Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, the revered Chief Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. His death marks the end of a life widely celebrated for extraordinary acts of courage, compassion, and moral leadership, particularly during the 2018 communal violence in Plateau State, where he saved the lives of hundreds of Christians.
During the height of the deadly attacks in June 2018, Imam Abubakar opened his mosque and private residence to more than 300 Christians fleeing the violence. At great personal risk, he sheltered these displaced victims for weeks, mobilizing local youths to guard those seeking refuge, and famously refusing demands by assailants to hand them over. His actions, rooted in Islamic teachings emphasizing the sanctity of human life, justice, and mercy, exemplified profound humanity amidst hostility.
His unparalleled heroism garnered significant national and international recognition. In 2019, he was honored with Nigeria’s Humanitarian of the Year Award and, notably, the United States government presented him with the International Religious Freedom Award. The Nigerian government had also announced plans to officially recognize his intervention.
Following his passing, various leaders and organizations have paid tribute and called for the preservation of his legacy. The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) Nigeria, described him as a "national hero" whose life embodied courage and moral leadership. MPAC’s Executive Chairman, Alhaji Disu Kamor, stated that Imam Abubakar's conduct reflected a long-standing Islamic tradition of protecting the innocent regardless of faith, drawing parallels to historic acts of religious tolerance by figures like Amir Abd al-Qadir and Prophet Muhammad. MPAC urged religious leaders, educators, media organizations, and policymakers to promote his legacy as a model of peaceful coexistence and nation-building.
President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over Imam Abdullahi’s death. In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President lauded the cleric for standing "firmly on the side of peace, benevolence and conscience" during a time when tribal and religious divisions threatened to overwhelm reason. President Tinubu emphasized that Imam Abubakar chose humanity over division and love over hatred, urging religious and community leaders to emulate his life of tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
Similarly, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State confirmed his death, describing it as a "monumental loss" to his family, community, and the state. The Governor highlighted Imam Abubakar's "unwavering commitment to peace, unity, and protection of the vulnerable, particularly women and children," noting that his guidance was much needed. He urged the family and community to find comfort in a life dedicated to service and peaceful coexistence.
Imam Abdullahi Abubakar will be remembered as a beacon of interfaith harmony, whose actions transcended religious and tribal lines, setting a powerful example of moral courage and compassionate leadership for the nation and the world.
