Zomato Founder Deepinder Goyal Unveils 'Healthy Mode' After Personal Guilt Trip!

Deepinder Goyal, the founder-CEO of Zomato, announced on September 29 the launch of a significant new feature designed to help users make healthier food choices: the "Healthy Mode." This initiative, which parent company Eternal has been developing, marks a pivotal step for the food delivery platform, aiming to address a long-held desire by Goyal to not just make food delivery easier, but fundamentally "better" in a deeper sense. Initially rolled out in Gurugram, the Healthy Mode is slated for rapid expansion to other major cities across India, reflecting Zomato's commitment to evolving its service offerings.
Goyal articulated his personal unease regarding Zomato's previous limitations in facilitating truly nutritious eating. While the platform excelled at providing convenience for ordering diverse meals, including salads or smoothie bowls, he felt it fell short in genuinely guiding users towards healthier, more nourishing options. This sentiment deeply resonated with Zomato’s overarching mission: "better food for more people." Goyal explained that the traditional definition of "better" needed to encompass health and well-being, leading to the development of this new, dedicated mode.
The core of Zomato's Healthy Mode lies in its innovative "Healthy Score," assigned to every dish available through this feature. This score, ranging from "Low" to "Super," is meticulously calculated based on critical nutritional factors beyond just calories. Key metrics include protein content, presence of complex carbohydrates, fiber levels, and essential micronutrients. Zomato emphasizes that these comprehensive calculations are powered by advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, leveraging extensive restaurant data to provide accurate and actionable insights for users. The aim is to present a simple, clear explanation of what makes a dish healthy and the reasoning behind its assigned score.
Significantly, Goyal highlighted that this is "not your run of the mill 'healthy mode' for beginners." Zomato has set a remarkably high standard for its Healthy Mode, ensuring that the food recommendations and scoring are robust enough for even professional athletes to rely on when seeking meals that align with their stringent dietary requirements. This commitment to a high bar underscores the thoroughness and scientific basis of the new feature.
For Deepinder Goyal, the introduction of Healthy Mode is deeply personal. He admitted carrying the "guilt" that Zomato, while making cravings easy to satisfy, had not made it equally simple to find food that truly nourished the body. He views Healthy Mode as the crucial first step in rectifying this oversight and truly living up to Zomato's mission. Following its initial launch in Gurgaon, Goyal has encouraged users to actively try the feature, provide candid feedback, and even "tear it apart" to identify areas for improvement, recognizing that this is merely the beginning of Zomato's journey towards truly empowering healthier eating choices across India.
