XPeng Unleashes Tesla Killer: New L03 SUV Targets Luxury EV Market

XPeng, a relatively young Chinese automaker founded in 2014, is making a significant global push with its new Mona L03 SUV, directly targeting established players like Tesla and BMW. The L03, available as either an electric vehicle (EV) or an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV), combines advanced technology, including large language model (LLM) vehicle voice controls and semi-autonomous driving capabilities, with an accessible starting price point around $40,000 in European markets.

XPeng has already demonstrated its engineering prowess with several vehicles, such as the P7 and G6 models, which have received positive feedback for their build quality and standard equipment. The L03, the first SUV to be simultaneously launched in both the Chinese and European markets, is poised for sale in 65 global markets this year, signifying XPeng's ambitious international expansion.

Aesthetically, the L03 is designed to be sleek and futuristic, featuring body-flush door handles and a distinct coupe-like silhouette. Its design cues draw inspiration from premium brands, with Polestar-esque headlights, a Porsche Macan EV-inspired rear, and even a Ferrari Purosangue-like profile. This high-end design influence is attributed to ex-Ferrari exterior design boss JuanMa Lopez, who oversaw its creation. The L03 boasts an impressive drag coefficient of just 0.228, matching that of the Tesla Model Y, and offers a towing capacity of up to 3,300 pounds with the right hardware.

Inside, the L03 diverges from the stark minimalism often seen in Tesla cabins, offering a luxurious and tech-rich environment. It features over 250 ambient lighting colors to set the mood, complemented by a 15.6-inch central display, an 8.8-inch digital driver information screen, and a large 26.8-inch head-up display. Comfort is prioritized with front seats offering four-way power lumbar support, 14-point full-body massage, ventilation, and heating. The tri-passenger rear bench is highly versatile with a 40/20/40 split and five levels of electrical adjustment.

Storage is another highlight, with a remarkable 37 storage spaces throughout the cabin. This includes a 3.6 cubic-foot front trunk (reducing to 2.4 cubic feet on all-wheel-drive models), a 0.35 cubic-foot rear pull-out drawer in the EV version, and a 19-cubic-foot rear trunk. Despite its sloped roof design, the L03's rear trunk space is nearly comparable to that of a Subaru Crosstrek.

The L03 is equipped with XPeng’s latest user interface and software suite, XOS 6.0, which has been developed with a global audience in mind. Notably, XPeng claims to be the first Asia-Pacific OEM to natively integrate Google Maps, a particularly interesting feature given service restrictions in China. Other embedded technologies include “European-tailored” parking aids, a standard driver monitoring system, and an advanced built-in large-language model for comprehensive vehicle controls via voice command.

For those seeking even more advanced capabilities, the Ultra versions of the L03 will feature XPeng’s emerging VLA 2.0 system. This semi-autonomous technology directly challenges Tesla’s Full Self-Driving, promising to navigate complex urban environments while adhering to local road laws and adapting to various driving behaviors. While designed to be a Level 4 full self-driving system, it currently offers advanced Level 2 capabilities with over-the-air upgrade potential. All these sophisticated systems are powered by XPeng’s proprietary Turing AI chips, which are touted as being faster than the Nvidia Orin processors found in some other XPeng models.
