An 800GB annual data plan should not get exhausted in just three months. That is the argument a Nigerian lawyer, identified as Zaenab Olawunmi Adams, has taken directly to MTN Nigeria, and now to court.

This was after her data balance dropped from 800GB to just 91.45GB in about 104 days. Her case, amplified using her X handle @yettydlaw_, has reopened a question Nigerians have always asked for years: where exactly does mobile data go, and why does it seem to disappear faster in Nigeria than anywhere else?

The Lawyer Who Is Suing MTN Over 800GB

Adams subscribed to the 800GB annual data plan on May 15, 2026, paying N125,000 for the annual package. By August 27, MTN's own records showed that 708.55GB, roughly 88% of the bundle, had already been consumed.

In her formal complaint, Adams stated she has been an MTN subscriber since childhood, uses only one mobile device, does not game online, and limits her usage to ordinary browsing, messaging and social media.

Rather than accept the figures, she demanded a full data reconciliation from MTN, covering the exact date, time and volume of every deduction between May 15 and August 27, alongside the details of which apps or services drew the heaviest usage.

She gave the telecom giant a deadline of 11:59pm on August 31, 2026, to respond with a comprehensive report, and has since opened a document for other affected subscribers to submit similar complaints, effectively turning her case to a mass consumer case.


How Nigerians Are Reacting on X

The complaint spread quickly and pulled in hundreds of Nigerians with their own stories of data getting exhausted faster than expected.

Another related case involved a user, Divaberry (@highchart), who bought 20GB the evening before and returned to find it nearly finished.

Her follow-up thread showed MTN's customer support handle responding with a detailed usage breakdown covering nearly 18GB consumed in nine hours. The breakdown listed Snapchat, Google Services, X/Twitter, WhatsApp, TikTok, encrypted app traffic, App Store activity, app sync and backup, Facebook and Instagram as the contributors.

However, Divaberry rejected the explanation, pointing out that she does not have Facebook installed on her phone at all, so she could not understand how Facebook breakdown appeared.

She also pushed back on the Google Services figure, which MTN listed at over 3GB without specifying which individual apps or services made up that number, and noted she had not been active on X that day either.

She demanded a proper session-by-session breakdown showing the time, destination and exact amount of data used for each transaction, rejecting broad app categories she could not independently verify.

The replies following the case, especially the genesis case, were divided. One group insists MTN and other Nigerian network operators are quietly shortchanging subscribers, pointing to years of similar complaints against telecommunication companies operating in the country.

The other group argues that background processes are the real culprit. Several commenters pointed out that features like automatic cloud backups, app updates, video autoplay and constant social media refreshing consumes data even when a phone is sitting untouched.

They also pointed out that doomscrolling itself, especially video-heavy scrolling on TikTok and Instagram Reels, consumes far more data than users assume.

A Nigerian based in Algeria added an international comparison to the thread, noting that four people sharing a 20GB bundle there had used it for five days without exhausting it which is a usage rate that is strikingly slower than what many Nigerian subscribers report at home.

What MTN and NCC Say Causes Data to Disappear Fast

This is not the first time Nigerian regulators have had to addressthe complaint. The Nigerian Communications Commission has repeatedly pointed to a familiar list of causes like streaming, automatic app updates, background app activity, malware, and data roaming.

The regulator has advised subscribers to disable background data for apps they rarely use, turn off automatic downloads, activate data-saving modes, install ad blockers, and connect to Wi-Fi whenever possible.

Telecom insiders have also pushed back on the idea that operators are deliberately inflating usage.

One industry source told local media that subscribers often assume their provider has stolen their data simply because a bundle finishes earlier than expected, when the more common explanation is a mix of encrypted app traffic, device settings and genuine consumption patterns that users underestimate.

Encrypted traffic from VPNs, private browsing tools and secure messaging apps is particularly hard to categorize and this fuels distrust because neither the subscriber nor the operator can always point to exactly which app used the data.

MTN itself has acknowledged this limitation directly to subscribers, explaining that categories like "Google Services" and "encrypted app traffic" are aggregated classifications that can bundle synchronization, updates, backups, adverts and any activity routed through secure connections, rather than a single identifiable app.

Operators have not escaped scrutiny entirely, though. Earlier in August, another widely shared complaint accused MTN of a reporting glitch after its daily usage report for a single day was later replaced with a "corrected" figure, suggesting the original number may have wrongly bundled several days of consumption into one.

Telecom operators are now reportedly working on data calculator tools to give subscribers clearer, app-by-app visibility into their consumption.


Is Nigeria's Data Measurement Different From Other Countries?

Part of the frustration comes down to how data is measured and marketed. Nigerian subscribers frequently compare their experience to bundles abroad, like the Algeria example, and conclude that a gigabyte in Nigeria might simply not be a gigabyte after all.

Technically, a gigabyte is a fixed unit, but real-world consumption depends heavily on network technology, video and image compression standards, app default settings, and how aggressively a device runs background tasks. All of these can vary by country, device model and even carrier configuration.

This is why two people using "the same" amount of data can have very different experiences depending on their phone, apps and location.


What This Means for Nigerian Data Users

Whatever the outcome of Adams' case, it has forced a public reckoning and has pushed MTN toward greater transparency. It has also given the NCC another platform to repeat its consumer advice, and given ordinary Nigerians a shared space to compare notes on a problem many had assumed was theirs alone.

Until telecom operators roll out clearer, real-time usage breakdowns, expect more subscribers to start asking the same question Adams did: where exactly is my data going?
