Wike-APC Secretary Showdown Rocks Rivers Politics

A fresh political storm has erupted between the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over alleged interference in the internal politics of Rivers State. The clash escalated sharply after Basiru openly demanded Wike’s resignation from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, describing the minister’s conduct as incompatible with his role in government and party politics. The confrontation has further exposed deepening tensions within Nigeria’s political landscape.

The dispute was triggered by Wike’s stern warning to Basiru to “leave Rivers State alone” and stop meddling in its affairs. Speaking during a thank-you visit to Oyigbo Local Government Area, Wike declared Rivers a political “no-go area” for outsiders, cautioning that those who interfered “may burn their hands.” He also alleged that the APC had either sought or benefited from a controversial ₦600 billion reportedly left in the state’s coffers, remarks that have fueled debate across party lines and drawn national attention.

Wike’s comments followed a previous visit to Khana and Gokana local government areas, where APC Vice Chairman (South-South), Victor Giadom, referred to Governor Siminalayi Fubara as “the so-called governor.” Giadom further claimed that Fubara would be unable to secure a second term without Wike’s backing, a statement that intensified the already volatile political atmosphere in Rivers and highlighted the lingering influence of the former governor in the state’s power dynamics.

Responding from Osogbo, Osun State, Senator Basiru dismissed Wike’s remarks as a “tirade” and described them as “uncouth” and unbecoming of a federal minister. He expressed shock that a serving cabinet member would openly issue threats and make allegations against the ruling party, arguing that such behavior undermines party discipline and democratic norms. Basiru insisted that the APC would not be intimidated and reaffirmed the party’s right to operate freely across all states, a position echoed in reports by TheCable.

The showdown underscores the advantages and disadvantages of Wike’s combative political style. While his assertiveness has helped him maintain relevance and control in Rivers politics, critics argue that it deepens divisions and weakens institutional stability. As reactions continue to pour in from party leaders and observers nationwide, analysts warn that the escalating rhetoric could reshape alliances ahead of future elections, placing Rivers State once again at the center of Nigeria’s politics.
