Westeros Expands: George R.R. Martin Confirms Thrilling New 'Game of Thrones' Spin-Off at HBO!

Fans of the world of Westeros have reason to rejoice, as A Song of Ice and Fire author George R. R. Martin recently confirmed during an appearance at the Iceland Noir convention that HBO is actively developing sequels to the critically acclaimed series Game of Thrones, not just prequels. This announcement marks a significant shift for fans who had believed the abandoned Jon Snow series was the final word on any post-Thrones narrative possibilities.
According to Martin, HBO currently has a robust slate of “five or six” spinoff projects in development. While the majority of these are indeed prequels, he crucially stated that “there are some sequels.” This is the first time Martin has explicitly confirmed that HBO is exploring stories set after the events of the Emmy-winning flagship series, opening up a realm of enormous possibilities for the franchise's future.
For years, the only known potential sequel was a series centered on Jon Snow, which would have seen Kit Harington reprise his role to explore Jon’s life beyond the Wall. Although previous reports suggested this project had been shelved, Martin’s latest comments effectively reopen the door to its revival. Furthermore, his use of the plural “sequels” hints at multiple post-Thrones narratives being considered, raising the intriguing question of what other stories HBO might tell.
One popular theory, actively discussed by Spanish fansite Los Siete Reinos which recorded Martin's comments, suggests an Arya Stark sequel. This idea holds considerable appeal, given that Arya sailed west of Westeros in the series finale, positioning her for an entirely unexplored journey. Adding to this speculation, actress Maisie Williams has openly expressed her willingness to return to the role if the story aligns with her vision. While less probable, there's also a theoretical chance HBO might venture into a sequel that introduces new characters navigating Westeros after Bran Stark ascends to the throne, though the immense value and appeal of the original cast in pop culture make this a less likely path.
While the prospect of sequels has deservedly captured headlines, Martin emphasized that HBO remains deeply invested in developing multiple prequels alongside the two that have already reached screens. These include House of the Dragon, which has been renewed and is set to return with its third season in 2026, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is scheduled to premiere on January 18.
Beyond these confirmed and upcoming shows, several other prequel projects are reportedly in various stages of development. These encompass previously announced and rumored titles such as Nymeria and the 10,000 Ships, The Sea Snake (focused on Corlys Velaryon), and Aegon the Conqueror (which could manifest as both a series and a potential movie). Additionally, an animated series set in Yi Ti, the well-known but shelved Blood Moon pilot starring Naomi Watts, and projects exploring the locales of Braavos and Flea Bottom are also part of HBO's expansive plans for the Westerosi universe. Until further sequel details emerge, fans can look forward to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in January and House of the Dragon Season 3 in summer 2026 as their next confirmed visits to Westeros.
