Valkyries Lock Down Key Player Veronica Burton on Multiyear Deal

Veronica Burton has officially committed to a multiyear contract, signaling her return to the Golden State Valkyries, as announced by the team on Saturday. Burton, recognized as the WNBA's reigning Most Improved Player, firmly established herself as the central figure for the Valkyries during their inaugural season.

In her third year in the league, Burton posted impressive statistics, averaging 11.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and a team-leading 6.0 assists per game. Her remarkable improvement was highlighted by her becoming the first player in WNBA history to increase her averages by at least five points, two rebounds, and two assists per game from one season to the next. This significant leap followed her 2024 season with the Connecticut Sun, where she averaged 3.1 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game.

Burton joined Golden State through the 2024 expansion draft and swiftly became an indispensable asset for the Valkyries. Her impact became even more pronounced after teammate Kayla Thornton sustained a season-ending injury in July. Burton embraced increased responsibility, ultimately playing a pivotal role in guiding the Valkyries to the playoffs. This achievement marked a historic milestone, as it was the first time in league history that an expansion team had reached the postseason in its debut year.

Valkyries general manager Ohemaa Nyanin underscored Burton's importance in a statement, saying, "Veronica was the backbone of this team in our inaugural season. She started every single game, led us in nearly every statistical category, and was the connective tissue between our locker room and our coaching staff. Her work ethic, leadership and voice were exactly what we needed in year one, and we cannot wait to see her continue to grow here in Golden State." This sentiment reinforces Burton's foundational role and the team's optimistic outlook for her future contributions.
