Belgium End USA’s World Cup Run with Dominant 4-1 Victory

The United States' World Cup campaign came to a disappointing end after Belgium produced a commanding 4-1 victory in Seattle to book a place in the quarter-finals. Despite the return of striker Folarin Balogun following the lifting of his red-card suspension, the Americans struggled to contain Belgium’s attack.

Charles De Ketelaere starred with two goals and an assist, opening the scoring in the eighth minute before restoring Belgium’s lead just a minute after Malik Tillman’s 31st-minute free-kick equaliser. Goalkeeper Matt Freese’s costly error gifted Hans Vanaken Belgium’s third before substitute Romelu Lukaku sealed the emphatic win in stoppage time.

US coach Mauricio Pochettino admitted his side never settled into the contest, saying they "didn’t connect with the game" from the opening whistle and would need to learn from the defeat. The Americans managed little attacking threat after Tillman’s goal, while Christian Pulisic’s afternoon ended early after suffering a foot injury that forced him off in the second half. Belgium’s victory also extended their unbeaten run to 18 matches and set up a quarter-final showdown with Spain.

For the United States, the defeat means their wait to reach a World Cup quarter-final for the first time since 2002 continues. Although the Americans recorded three wins in the expanded 48-team tournament, the loss also extended their poor record against European opposition, with 11 defeats in their last 12 meetings.

The result completed a disappointing tournament for CONCACAF, as the United States, Mexico, Canada, and the region’s other representatives were all eliminated in the Round of 16, leaving Belgium to continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.
