Urgent Health Crisis: Rare Deadly Mpox Strain Strikes Australia, Second Case Ever Recorded
A rare and more dangerous strain of the Mpox virus, known as Clade 1, has been confirmed inQueensland, Australia, marking the first-ever case in the state and only the second known detection of this severe strain in Australia's history. The Queensland Health officials reported that the infected individual had recently returned from overseas and sought care at Logan Hospitalin the Metro South region, where the diagnosis was made.
Clade 1 is significantly more severe than Clade 2, the milder strain responsible for most of Australia's 2022 Mpox outbreak. Infectious diseases expert Dr. Paul Griffin noted that Clade 1 is notorious for causing a more widespread rash, characterized by big blisters or pox-like lesions across the body, and can also lead to other severe symptoms such as high fevers.

This strain has been associated with higher rates of complications, including secondary infections, and in rare cases, death, particularly in regions with limited healthcare access. The first Australian case of Clade 1 was reported in New South Wales in May 2025, also involving a traveler returning from Africa. Clade 1 is more commonly found in Central Africaand has seen increased global spread over the past year, prompting heightened surveillance efforts worldwide.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection akin to smallpox but typically milder, presenting with fever, body aches, swollen lymph nodes, and a distinctive blistering rash. Clade 1 distinguishes itself by causing larger, more widespread blisters and more severe fevers, with a higher mortality rate. The virus primarily spreads through close, prolonged, or intimate contact, which includes skin-to-skin contact, exposure to bodily fluids, respiratory droplets during close face-to-face interaction, or contact with contaminated materials like clothing or bedding. While anyone can contract Mpox, individuals at higher risk include those with multiple intimate partners, travelers returning from endemic areas, close contacts of confirmed cases, and healthcare or frontline workers.

Following the diagnosis in Queensland, the patient has been placed in isolation. Health officials are actively engaged in contact tracing to identify and notify anyone who may have been exposed to the virus. Despite the severity of the Clade 1 strain, authorities have assured the public that there is no immediate threat to the broader community. Furthermore, Australia offers free Mpox vaccines to high-risk individuals, with two doses recommended for full protection. Individuals who believe they are at risk are encouraged to contact their local sexual health clinic or general practitioner to schedule vaccination.
