A significant recall is currently underway for frozen salmon distributed through BJ's Wholesale Club locations across seven states due to potential contamination with Listeria.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiated this recall after a randomly collected sample of the salmon tested positive for Listeria, a bacterium known to cause rare but potentially fatal foodborne infections.
Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with this specific recall to date, consumers are urged to take immediate action to ensure their safety.
The recalled product is specifically identified as "Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon," packaged in 2-pound bags. Consumers can identify the affected product by the UPC 888670025963 and lot number 3896.
This salmon was produced by Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. and was sold at BJ's Wholesale Club stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
The affected sales period for this product spans from January 31 to February 7, 2026.
Consumers who have purchased this specific frozen salmon are strongly advised not to consume it. It is crucial to check freezers for the recalled item and dispose of it immediately.
For instructions on how to obtain a full refund and guidance on handling the remaining product, consumers should contact Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. directly at 1-888-628-0730.
Listeria infection, or listeriosis, can manifest with symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. While it is rare, it can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations.
Anyone who believes they may have consumed the contaminated salmon should closely monitor for these symptoms and seek medical attention from a healthcare provider if any develop.
This recall shows the importance of vigilance in food safety to prevent potential health risks.
