Harvard Study Finds Six Lifestyle Habits Boost GLP-1 Heart Benefits by Over 40%

Millions using GLP-1 medications could significantly improve their heart health by adopting six key lifestyle habits, researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found.
The long-term study tracked 100,000 U.S. veterans prescribed GLP-1 drugs between 2011 and 2023, including Ozempic, Wegovy, and Saxenda.
Researchers examined whether combining medication with healthy habits reduced the risk of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE), defined as heart attack, stroke, or death from heart disease.
The eight lifestyle factors assessed included balanced diet, regular exercise, not smoking, quality sleep, low alcohol intake, stress management, social connection, and avoiding opioid misuse.
Results showed that GLP-1 users who adopted at least six positive changes reduced their risk of a major cardiac event by more than 40%.
Medication alone lowered MACE risk by 16%, while combining treatment with all eight healthy habits slashed the risk by an impressive 60%.
Professor Frank Hu emphasized that even with advanced pharmacotherapy, lifestyle changes remain central to diabetes management and cardiovascular protection.
The study acknowledged limitations, noting its observational design and a cohort largely composed of white male veterans.
GLP-1 drugs, such as Wegovy, work by mimicking a natural gut hormone that regulates blood sugar and appetite.
In the UK, around 2.5 million people are estimated to use GLP-1 treatments, reflecting growing demand for medical weight loss solutions.
According to NHS England, prescriptions are currently limited to patients with a BMI above 35 and related health conditions, or those with slightly lower BMI referred to specialist services.
With two-thirds of Britons classified as overweight or obese, experts say combining medication with sustainable lifestyle changes offers the strongest long-term protection against cardiovascular disease.
