The long-standing dream of flying cars, a staple of science fiction and a common jest regarding future technology, appears to be moving closer to reality. This renewed interest is fueled by the recent announcement from the U.S. Department of Transportation regarding a new pilot project. Named the Advanced Air Mobility and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Integration Pilot Program, or AAM & eVTOL IPP, this initiative aims to foster air taxi adoption and enhance vertical takeoff and landing cargo capabilities across 26 states. This ambitious program prompts a look back at how close Hollywood's imaginative depictions of aerial automobiles have come to real-life technological advancements.

Hollywood has consistently indulged the public's fascination with vehicles capable of soaring above congested roadways, providing numerous memorable examples that predated current technological pursuits. One such iconic depiction comes from the 1974 James Bond film, "The Man With the Golden Gun." In this installment, the villain Scaramanga employs a unique escape vehicle: an AMC Matador coupe that transforms into an aircraft. While hiding in a hangar, Scaramanga attaches an enormous set of wings and a jet engine to the coupe, enabling it to take to the skies for a dramatic getaway.

The operational concept of Scaramanga's Matador was relatively straightforward: wings provided lift, and a turbine delivered thrust. A notable feature of this fictional design was its modularity, allowing the flight components to be attached and removed as required. Large struts linked the wings to the rocker panels of the car, creating a clip-on assembly. On set, this impressive setup measured an astounding 42 feet wide. Although the prop did not actually achieve flight, its realism was such that crew members had to monitor it closely during windy conditions, as the AMC Matador had a tendency to lift off the ground due to the substantial wing structure.

Intriguingly, the concept of a car that converts into a plane, as seen with Scaramanga's Matador, has historical parallels in the real world. This design ethos aligns with the "planes that can drive" segment of the aerospace industry, which saw some of the earliest forms of commercially available auto-fliers. A prime example is the Aerocar, a vehicle introduced for sale in the early 1950s. The Aerocar bears a striking resemblance to Bond's escape machine, particularly with its removable wings and fuselage, which could be detached when ground travel was preferred over flight. This made the Aerocar a near-direct analog and likely an inspiration for the cinematic prop.

Another, less fortunate, real-world attempt from a similar era to the Matador's release was the AVE Mizar. This prototype, colloquially known as a "flying Pinto," integrated a set of detachable wings and a pusher propeller, borrowed from a Cessna Skymaster, onto the body of Ford's ill-fated econocar. Unfortunately, the Mizar shared some of the Pinto's notoriety for bad luck, as its inventors tragically perished during a crash in the prototype testing phase, highlighting the inherent challenges and dangers of early flying car development.
