Uganda's Rap Scene Electrified: Bond 7 Celebrates Roots at 2025 Hip Hop Awards
The 8th edition of the UG Hip Hop Awards in Kampala, Uganda, delivered a vibrant celebration of the genre, highlighting passion, precision, and reverence for the foundational elements defining true hip hop craft. Hosted at the IUEA Auditorium, the event gathered pioneering figures and emerging talents across Uganda's rap industry to honor the distinctive sound, style, and soul that shapes their community. The evening celebrated both individual achievements and the collective bonds uniting the hip hop fraternity.
Bond 7, a key partner for the awards, infused the event with its ethos of unity and bold spirit. Guests were welcomed on the red carpet with complimentary 200ml Bond 7 serves, setting a celebratory tone. A dedicated cocktail bar further showcased the brand, offering simple yet bold drinks that complemented the night’s theme: blending individual artistry with collective support in Uganda’s hip hop scene. Hillary Baguma, speaking for Bond 7, stated, "Tonight is about celebrating the bonds this genre creates, the stories it tells, and the community it strengthens. As Bond 7, we are proud to support and honour all the trailblazers and newcomers here."
The ceremony itself paid homage to the diverse sounds and career trajectories spanning the country. Among the evening's highlights, Geoffrey Ekongot received a standing ovation for his Lifetime Achievement award, honoring his enduring influence on the genre. The prestigious Song of the Year award went to Tai Dai, Axon, and Soundlykbb for their track “N**** in Fashion,” while Recho Rey was named Female Artiste of the Year, and Pryce Teeba earned Male Artiste of the Year, celebrating their exceptional contributions to Ugandan hip hop.
The night concluded with a powerful performance by legendary artist Babaluku. Reflecting on the evolution of hip hop and the importance of celebrating the art form in academic spaces, he remarked, "We are bonded here by rap. To see it celebrated in a place of learning with support from partners like Bond 7, means we get to see it persist, grow, and fearlessly evolve." Following this inspiring event, Bond 7 reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating the connections and bold spirit that define Uganda’s hip hop community.
