Trump Shocks World with Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire Deal and Prisoner Swap

Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, effective May 9th, 10th, and 11th. This significant development coincides with Russian President Vladimir Putin's preparations for a grand celebration in Moscow this weekend, commemorating the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. Trump conveyed the news on Truth Social, emphasizing, "I am pleased to announce that there will be a three day ceasefire (May 9th, 10th, and 11th) in the War between Russia and Ukraine." He further acknowledged Ukraine's crucial role in World War II, stating, "The Celebration in Russia is for Victory Day but, likewise, in Ukraine, because they were also a big part and factor of World War II."

The announced ceasefire dictates a complete halt to all military operations and includes a substantial prisoner exchange. Under the agreement, 1,000 prisoners of war will be swapped from each country. Currently, Russia is reported to hold approximately 7,000 Ukrainian soldiers as POWs, while Ukraine has captured around 4,000 Russian soldiers. Trump credited his direct intervention for the agreement, adding, "This request was made directly by me, and I very much appreciate its agreement by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy."

Trump expressed his hope that this ceasefire would be a crucial step towards ultimately ending the "very long, deadly" conflict, which he described as the biggest since World War II. He indicated that "talks are continuing on ending this major conflict... and we are getting closer and closer every day." This announcement follows earlier discussions where Trump had privately raised the possibility of a ceasefire with Putin during a 90-minute phone call, although nothing was confirmed at that time.

The diplomatic activity extends beyond the immediate ceasefire. Chinese President Xi Jinping is currently in Russia, participating in celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany, also known as the Great Patriotic War. Xi's visit precedes an anticipated summit in Beijing where he is expected to host Trump. Several other national leaders, including the presidents of Brazil and Serbia, and the prime minister of Slovakia, are also slated to attend Putin's celebration in Moscow.

Prior to Trump's intervention, President Putin had proposed a three-day ceasefire with Ukraine earlier in the week, but this was met with a negative reaction from Ukraine. President Zelenskyy initially stated he would only accept a ceasefire if it lasted 30 days and also raised concerns about guaranteeing the safety of foreign dignitaries attending Moscow's traditional May 9 Victory Parade. However, in the wake of Trump's announcement and intervention, it appears Ukraine has now acceded to the demands for the three-day halt in hostilities.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has resulted in an immense human toll, making it the bloodiest European conflict since World War II. Reports indicate more than 1.2 million Russian casualties and over 600,000 Ukrainians killed or wounded. During his 2024 campaign, Trump had famously vowed to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours of taking office. However, now 15 months into his term, despite multiple diplomatic summits, a clear end to the conflict remains elusive, though the current ceasefire marks a significant diplomatic breakthrough.
