Shockwave Hits BONK: Upbit Announces Unexpected Delisting!
South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Upbit announced it will delist Bonk Inu (BONK) by September 7, 2026, citing unresolved security and compliance issues. Users have until October 7, 2026, to withdraw their holdings. This decision reflects South Korea's stricter regulatory approach to investor protection.
The South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Upbit has officially announced the delisting of Bonk Inu (BONK), citing persistent and unresolved security and compliance issues. This decision, following weeks of review and an earlier designation of BONK as a 'trading caution' asset in early July 2026, underscores a growing trend among Korean exchanges to adopt more stringent measures for investor protection within the virtual asset market.
Upbit confirmed that trading support for BONK will cease on September 7, 2026, at 15:00 KST. At this precise time, all pending buy and sell orders for BONK will be automatically canceled. Users holding BONK on the platform will have a 30-day grace period, until October 7, 2026, to withdraw their holdings. The exchange explicitly stated that its decision was not influenced by market performance or trading volume, but rather by critical issues identified during an examination conducted in accordance with South Korea's virtual asset listing guidelines.
During its review, Upbit reportedly discovered significant unresolved problems related to security incidents concerning BONK's wallets or its underlying blockchain infrastructure. The exchange highlighted that the root causes of these incidents had not been adequately identified or subsequently fixed. Furthermore, Upbit criticized the project's handling of material disclosures, stating that crucial information was not communicated in a timely or suitable manner to its users or the exchange itself.
Following the initial 'trading caution' status and increased surveillance in July, Upbit conducted a thorough re-evaluation to ascertain if the identified issues had been rectified. Concluding that these problems remained unresolved, the exchange proceeded with ending trading support for BONK, consistent with its established policy for delisting digital assets. This move by Upbit reinforces the tightening of listing requirements across South Korean exchanges, a direct response to evolving regulatory reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and mitigating risks for individual investors. Projects now face increased pressure to adhere to robust security protocols, ensure prompt public disclosures, and demonstrate strong governance to maintain their listing status.
While the delisting represents a considerable setback for BONK within the Korean market, its accessibility on foreign cryptocurrency exchanges remains unaffected. Upbit emphasized that this action is specific to its internal compliance framework and should not be interpreted as an indication that the Bonk project has ceased operations altogether. Investors who currently hold BONK on Upbit are strongly advised to initiate the withdrawal of their assets before the October 7, 2026 deadline to avoid any potential complications once the token's support is completely discontinued on the platform.
