The Federal Ministry of Transportation announced the casualties on Tuesday, June 8, with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirming the derailment occurred the previous day, Monday, June 8, on the Warri-Itakpe Train Service corridor.

Funsho Adebiyi, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, detailed that preliminary reports indicated four coaches capsized while an additional coach derailed. The unfortunate loss of life included two adult females, one adult male, and one infant passenger. In addition to the fatalities, 24 people sustained serious injuries, while several others suffered less severe wounds. An NRC staff member was also reported to have suffered a traumatic limb injury but is currently in stable condition and receiving treatment.

The ill-fated train was carrying a total of 482 persons. This count included 442 booked passengers and 40 crew members, security personnel, and third-party service providers. Among the passengers on board were notable figures such as Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central, and Patrick Ukah, a former Secretary to the Delta State Government.
