The vessel had departed from Tugan Sule in Shagunu Ward and was en route to Dugga, where the passengers intended to pay a condolence visit. Confirmations of the disaster were issued by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), with statements from its Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arah, and the Director of Information and Special Duties, Dr. Ibrahim Hussaini. The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Area Manager, Akapo Adeboye, also corroborated the incident.
Investigations Point to Submerged Obstacle and Overloading
Investigations into the cause of the capsizing indicated that the boat collided with a submerged tree stump. This issue was significantly compounded by suspected overloading of the boat, a factor frequently cited in such tragedies. Furthermore, it was revealed that despite existing government mandates regarding waterway safety, the passengers onboard were not wearing life jackets, which could have potentially mitigated the loss of life.
Rescue Efforts and Ongoing Search

Rescue operations, swiftly initiated and spearheaded by NSEMA’s search and rescue teams, managed to save 50 individuals from the water. However, the search for the two remaining missing persons is actively continuing. This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of adhering to maritime safety regulations, including stringent passenger limits and the mandatory use of life-saving equipment like life jackets, to prevent future occurrences of such a devastating scale.
Conclusion: A Wake-Up Call on Waterway Safety
How many more lives must be lost before safety becomes standard, not optional? Each tragedy on our waters is a preventable failure.
