Springboks Humiliated! All Blacks Dominate, Strip South Africa of Rugby's Top Ranking
The All Blacks defeated the Springboks 33-16 in the opening Test, seizing an early lead in the series and stripping South Africa of their world No. 1 ranking. Despite a promising first half, the Springboks crumbled after the break, now facing injury concerns ahead of the crucial second Test in Cape Town.
The All Blacks secured a decisive 33-16 victory over the Springboks in the opening Test of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series at Ellis Park, Johannesburg, on Saturday. This comprehensive win saw New Zealand take an early lead in the four-Test series and resulted in the Springboks surrendering their coveted No. 1 position in the World Rugby rankings, dropping to second place behind the All Blacks. The 17-point margin marked the All Blacks' biggest-ever win against the Springboks at Ellis Park.
Despite holding a narrow 13-12 lead at half-time, the Springboks experienced a dramatic second-half collapse, failing to contain an increasingly confident All Blacks side. New Zealand dominated the scoring with five tries, including a brace from Will Jordan, and additional five-pointers from Josh Moorby, Fabian Holland, and Luke Jacobson. Ruben Love successfully converted four of these tries. In contrast, the Springboks managed only one try, scored by Andre Esterhuizen, with Cheslin Kolbe contributing a conversion and two penalties. The Springboks also spurned several attacking opportunities during their periods of dominance, a factor contributing to their ultimate defeat.
Individual performances for the Springboks were mixed. The Bok front row earned high praise, demonstrating exceptional dominance at the set-piece and dismantling their All Blacks counterparts to establish themselves as premier scrummagers in world rugby. Jasper Wiese was highlighted as a 'one-man army,' delivering a massive all-round shift with powerful carries and dominant tackles, solidifying his status as South Africa’s premier eighthman. Stand-in captain Pieter-Steph du Toit was consistently at the forefront of the Springboks' positive actions, excelling at collision points and assisting in the line-out. Andre Esterhuizen, coming off the bench early for the injured Kurt-Lee Arendse, made an immediate impact by scoring a try and displaying versatility across multiple positions. However, fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu struggled to impose himself and failed to take control of the game as the chief playmaker.
Compounding the defeat, Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus now faces injury concerns for key players, including wingers Kurt-Lee Arendse and Cheslin Kolbe, ahead of the next fixture. The updated World Rugby rankings now place New Zealand first with 94.03 points, followed by South Africa with 92.21 points.
The Springboks will have an immediate opportunity for redemption when the teams meet again in the second Test. This crucial match is scheduled for Saturday, 29 August, at Cape Town Stadium, with kick-off at 17:10. South Africa will be determined to deliver a vastly improved performance on home soil and regain lost momentum in the series.
