Tributes have continued to pour in following the tragic killing of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old lawyer-turned-journalist and anchor with Arise News. She was fatally shot during a robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed the incident, describing it as “a cruel and senseless act that has no place in a sane society.”

Commissioner of Police Ajao S. Adewale has ordered a discreet and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Maduagwu's death, deploying intelligence assets to track and apprehend the perpetrators. He urged residents to provide timely and useful information, pledging that “every effort will be made to bring the perpetrators to justice.” According to the FCT Administration’s Mandate Secretary for Health, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, Somtochukwu was brought dead to Maitama General Hospital at about 4:30 AM on Monday, with preliminary medical reports forwarded to the police to aid their investigation.

The killing has elicited widespread condemnation and condolences from various high-ranking officials. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, extended sincere condolences on behalf of his ministry and family to Maduagwu’s family and Arise News. FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, expressed his pain, describing her death as “tragic and painful.” He assured that the Police would unravel the circumstances, emphasizing that her death was “not only a loss to the Arise News family, but to the Nigerian media and the entire nation as a whole.”

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State mourned Somtochukwu as “a shining star whose light has been prematurely extinguished,” highlighting her distinguished career as a News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer. He called for a “thorough, swift, and transparent investigation.” The Kogi State Government, through Commissioner Kingsley Femi Fanwo, described her as “a consummate professional” and urged security agencies to ensure swift justice. Senator Oluremi Tinubu lamented that she had been “cut down in her prime” and condoled with her family, colleagues, and Arise News, hoping for the swift apprehension of the perpetrators. Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, also expressed shock and sadness, extending heartfelt condolences and wishing for justice to prevail.

Civil society groups and media organizations have also voiced their grief and outrage. ActionAid Nigeria recalled Somtochukwu’s contributions in amplifying their advocacy, noting that her professionalism and dedication would be fondly remembered. The Obidient Movement condemned the “senseless killing,” stressing that it “underscores the gross insecurity and brutal violence plaguing Nigeria.” They demanded that the government prioritize the safety and security of all citizens, especially journalists. Similarly, the League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja (LAJA) described her as “a passionate voice for truth, justice, and accountability,” asserting that “anything less than justice would be an affront to the ideals of justice and human dignity.”

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), through its President Mr. Eze Anaba and General Secretary Mr. Onuoha Ukeh, described the incident as ‘senseless,’ stating that journalism had lost a committed professional and a representative of its future. The NGE emphasized that her death was a stark reminder of the dangers Nigerians face daily due to insecurity, including armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, and insurgency. The guild called on the Federal Government to expedite action in addressing the root causes of insecurity and ensure the safety of all citizens, demanding that those responsible for Maduagwu’s death be swiftly brought to justice.

Somtochukwu, fondly called “Sommie,” was a lawyer by training who pursued journalism as a passion. Colleagues remembered her as vibrant, industrious, and fearless, with a promising career tragically cut short. The Nigerian media community has been plunged into mourning, with many calling for justice not only for Somtochukwu but also for countless other victims of violent crimes. The consensus among leaders, colleagues, and civil society remains clear: justice must be swift, and Nigeria must do more to protect its journalists and citizens from the pervasive violence.
