2027 Polls Spark Chaos: IEBC Orders Public Officers to Resign by February 10

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially unveiled its comprehensive calendar for the 2027 General Election, with Chairperson Erastus Ethekon confirming that the polls will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2027. This announcement marks a crucial step in preparations, providing clear timelines for political parties, aspirants, and all stakeholders involved in the electoral process.

A primary directive from the IEBC targets public officers intending to vie for elective positions. Such individuals are mandated to resign from their current public offices by Wednesday, February 10, 2027. Ethekon emphasized that this deadline falls precisely six months prior to the General Election, making adherence to this timeline non-negotiable. The commission stressed that these dates are legally binding and fundamental to ensuring an orderly and credible electoral process.

The calendar outlines several key milestones for political parties. They are required to submit their membership lists and details of candidates slated to participate in party primaries by March 16, 2027. Following this, all party primaries and any associated disputes must be concluded by May 8, 2027. Independent candidates also face a similar deadline, as they must meet all their legal obligations by the same date.

Further into the schedule, presidential aspirants are given until May 24, 2027, to submit their lists of supporting voters. These supporters must be drawn from a majority of Kenya’s counties, reflecting a broad base of support. Candidate registration for all elective positions will subsequently commence on May 29, 2027, with specific deadlines tailored for the various categories of aspirants.

The official campaign period is set to begin after candidates have been registered, but explicitly states it will not start earlier than May 29, 2027. Campaigns will run until August 7, 2027, concluding 48 hours before Kenyans head to the polls. Chairperson Ethekon issued a stern warning against premature electioneering, clarifying that any campaigning activity outside this legally prescribed window, including the display of posters, billboards, and political caravans, will be deemed unlawful.

The IEBC also highlighted the importance of adhering to the Electoral Code of Conduct. Violations of this code could lead to a range of sanctions, from formal warnings and fines to restrictions on public meetings, demonstrations, marches, campaign materials, and even access to specific electoral areas. Ethekon cautioned that persistent or serious violations, particularly those involving violence, intimidation, or systematic breaches, could result in more severe consequences, including orders from the High Court that might affect an offender’s participation in future elections. The Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee will be fully operational during the campaign period to address any breaches.

Moreover, the commission reiterated that campaigning in places of worship and during burial ceremonies is strictly prohibited throughout the entire election period. Ethekon urged all political parties, candidates, and their supporters to strictly comply with all electoral laws and regulations to ensure a fair and peaceful election.
