Tragedy Strikes Lisbon: British Couple Among Casualties in Deadly Funicular Crash

A tragic incident unfolded in Lisbon on Wednesday, September 3, when a carriage of the iconic Glória funicular railway derailed and crashed. The accident, which occurred around 18:15 local time (17:15 GMT) near the Avenida da Liberdade boulevard, resulted in a significant loss of life and numerous injuries, prompting national mourning in Portugal and widespread international sorrow.
Portuguese authorities initially reported 17 fatalities but later revised the death toll to 16, attributing the discrepancy to a duplicate registration of a victim. Among those killed were five Portuguese nationals, three Britons (later identified as Kayleigh Smith, 36, and Will Nelson, 44, with a third Briton unnamed), two South Koreans, two Canadians, an American, a French, a Ukrainian, and a Swiss citizen. André Jorge Gonçalves Marques, an employee of the city's public transport operator Carris for 15 years, was also among the deceased. Families of the British victims, Ms. Smith and Mr. Nelson, paid heartfelt tributes, describing their immense heartbreak.
Beyond the fatalities, 23 people were injured, with six admitted to intensive care. The injured included individuals of Portuguese, German, South Korean, Swiss, Cape Verdean, and Moroccan nationalities. Notably, a three-year-old German child was rescued from the wreckage, and a German citizen initially believed to be dead was later found alive in a hospital.
The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation. While officials state it is too early to determine the exact cause, a Portuguese newspaper, Observador, reported that a cable came loose, causing the funicular to lose control and collide with a building. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos, with people running from the smoke-engulfed area and others trapped in the crumpled yellow carriage, which lay overturned on the cobblestone street. Marianna Figueiredo, a tour guide, recounted witnessing people jumping from windows to escape and the profound silence that followed the crash, calling it a
