Tragedy Strikes Lagos: Festac DPO Matilda Ngbaronye Passes Away

The Lagos State Police Command is in deep sorrow following the passing of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Matilda Ngbaronye, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Festac Division. CSP Ngbaronye died on Friday, October 24, 2025, at approximately 11:30 p.m. at the Mayriamville Medical Centre in Surulere, Lagos State, during a medical session for fibroid treatment. The incident was confirmed by Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, and later by an official statement from the Command, describing her death as a devastating and irreparable loss.
Throughout her career, CSP Ngbaronye was celebrated for her unwavering professionalism, integrity, and profound dedication to service. The Lagos State Police Command's official statement lauded her as a "truly upright and dedicated officer," known for her diligence, discipline, and exceptional commitment to duty. Her friendly disposition and humane approach to policing were instrumental in fostering stronger relationships and bridging the gap between the Police Force and the communities she dutifully served, particularly in Festac Town where she was known for her resolve to tackle crime.
CSP Ngbaronye joined the Nigeria Police Force on April 19, 2010, and rapidly distinguished herself through various capacities within the Lagos State Command. Her notable roles included Deputy Police Public Relations Officer (DPPRO) from December 2020, crime officer at Dolphin Estate Division, general investigation and fingerprint expert at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID), Panti, and officer-in-charge of the Public Complainants Bureau. She also served with distinction as a public information officer under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). She had assumed the position of DPO of Festac Division about six months prior to her death, vowing to rid the area of criminal elements, and celebrated her last birthday on May 24, just five months before her passing.
The news of her demise came as a rude shock to the entire Command, with Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, expressing deep sorrow. CP Jimoh, on behalf of all officers and men, extended heartfelt condolences to her family, including her husband and elder brother, who is a priest, and her aged mother. Tributes have poured in from colleagues, subordinates, and residents of Festac Town, who remember her as diligent, compassionate, and an exemplary leader.
The Lagos State Police Command has assured that details regarding burial arrangements will be communicated in due course, asking for her gentle soul to rest in perfect peace. Her legacy of selfless service and community engagement will be fondly remembered.
