Tour Mayhem: Monica Seizes Ray J's Phone Amid Beyoncé & Jay-Z Drama

Ray J ignited a significant stir on the internet earlier this week specifically on December 2, when he publicly called out music power couple Beyoncé and Jay-Z. His accusations stemmed from their alleged refusal to interact with his sister, Brandy, backstage during her co-headlining The Boy Is Mine Tour with Monica. The situation prompted an immediate and humorous response from Monica during the Atlanta stop of the tour on Thursday, December 4, effectively diffusing the tension.

Ray J’s grievances, aired just two days before Monica’s intervention, centered on his frustration that Beyoncé and Jay-Z had attended multiple tour stops without acknowledging Brandy backstage. He expressed his disappointment, stating, “N—as need to pull up when they come to the show. Come say what’s up to Brandy too, Jay-Z and Beyoncé.” Ray J emphasized his family’s admiration and respect for The Carters, making their perceived snubs even more upsetting to him. He added, “For y’all to come to every one of Brandy and Monica’s shows and never say what’s up… and take all the pictures, I don’t like it.”

Beyoncé had indeed attended several dates of The Boy Is Mine Tour, including shows in Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and Newark. She publicly shared photos from these appearances on her official website and Instagram page. Notably, these photos included several backstage moments, a group shot with Monica, Solange, Patti LaBelle, and special guest Kelly Rowland. However, neither Beyoncé nor Jay-Z has issued any response to Ray J’s comments.

During the Atlanta concert, Monica took a lighthearted approach to the controversy. On stage, she playfully announced, “Before we leave here, I am going to take Ray J’s phone… Ray J, give me the phone… give me the phone, Ray.” After a humorous back-and-forth, Monica successfully wrestled the phone from his hands, thanking him with a smile and assuring the crowd she was only joking. She then addressed the audience: “We love you, Ray J. Y’all make some noise for Ray J. He’s not just Brandy’s brother, but he’s my brother, too.”

Brandy added to the moment with her own joke: “I hope you know I’m [gonna] have to hear this all night, ‘Monica is my sister now!’” Monica’s warm and humorous intervention effectively “killed the noise” surrounding Ray J’s earlier call-out.

Adding context to Ray J’s recent public behavior, just days before his remarks about The Carters, he was involved in a legal incident. On Thanksgiving—November 27—Ray J was taken into police custody in Los Angeles, facing charges of making a criminal threat after allegedly pointing a gun at his ex-wife, Princess Love, during a livestreamed argument. He was later released the same night on a $50,000 bond.

Despite the unfolding celebrity drama, Brandy and Monica’s co-headlining The Boy Is Mine Tour continued without interruption. Following the Atlanta stop, the tour moved to the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans on Friday, December 5, before heading to Houston, Tampa, and Miami, continuing its successful run across multiple cities.
