Tinubu's Controversial Ambassadorial Picks Spark Outcry
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has recently stirred significant national debate with his submission of ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation. The nominations, totaling 35 individuals across two batches, have drawn sharp criticism from the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has demanded their immediate withdrawal due to concerns over the nominees' integrity and democratic credentials.
The first batch comprised three names: Ambassador Ayodele Oke, Ambassador Amin Mohammed Dalhatu, and Retired Colonel Lateef Kayode Are, who are considered for postings to strategic nations such as the UK, USA, or France. Subsequently, President Tinubu forwarded a second, larger list of 32 nominees, comprising 15 career ambassadors and 17 non-career ambassadors. Among the prominent non-career designates are Chief Femi Fani-Kayode (former Aviation Minister), Reno Omokri (former Presidential aide), Professor Mahmood Yakubu (immediate-past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC), Erelu Angela Adebayo (former Ekiti First Lady), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (former Enugu Governor), Fatima Florence Ajimobi (former First Lady of Oyo State), Victor Okezie Ikpeazu (former Abia Governor), and Senator Jimoh Ibrahim. The list of career nominees includes Enebechi Monica Okwuchukwu (Abia), Yakubu Nyaku Danladi (Taraba), Miamuna Ibrahim Besto (Adamawa), Musa Musa Abubakar (Kebbi), Syndoph Paebi Endoni (Bayelsa), Chima Geoffrey Lioma David (Ebonyi), Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim (Ogun), Abimbola Samuel Reuben (Ondo), Yvonne Ehinosen Odumah (Edo), Hamza Mohammed Salau (Niger), Ambassador Shehu Barde (Katsina), Ambassador Ahmed Mohammed Monguno (Borno), Ambassador Muhammad Saidu Dahiru (Kaduna), Ambassador Olatunji Ahmed Sulu Gambari (Kwara), and Ambassador Wahab Adekola Akande (Osun). Noteworthy is the inclusion of four women on the career list and six on the non-career list among the 32 nominees.
The PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, articulated its profound disappointment and condemnation of the ambassadorial selections. The party asserted that the list is "populated by people with 'integrity deficit'," including "disgraced propagandists, characterless politicians, and public officials" who are "widely perceived negatively by Nigerians and the global community." Ememobong labeled the development as not merely a "sad commentary" on Nigeria's diplomatic history but also "very reprehensible and scandalous."
A specific and deeply contentious point for the PDP is the nomination of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the immediate-past Chairman of INEC. The party accused his administration of the electoral body of being "characterised by countless double-speaks, flip-flops, and undelivered promises," which it claims "ultimately resulted in the birth of this administration, which is struggling in all areas of governance." The PDP further alleged that offering him an ambassadorial appointment at this juncture is an "excellent exemplar of a skewed reward system," strongly suggesting it is "designed as an incentive to the new INEC Chairman, to also deliver flawed elections in 2027, in expectation of future rewards." This accusation was branded as "absolutely scandalous and completely unacceptable."
Beyond individual nominees, the PDP also criticized the extensive delay in presenting the list, stating that the President's almost three-year period to produce these names "speaks to the paucity of excellent people within his reach." The party emphasized the critical link between a country's global respect and the integrity profile of both its President and its ambassadors. Appointing and dispatching ambassadors with "tainted political profiles" would thus constitute a "great disservice to Nigeria" and set the stage for a "diplomatic all-time low." Consequently, the PDP unequivocally demanded that President Tinubu withdraw the current list and renominate only individuals possessing "stellar democratic credentials and high moral standing, capable of commanding global respect" for these crucial diplomatic assignments.
These newly confirmed ambassadors are earmarked for postings in countries with which Nigeria maintains excellent and strategic bilateral relations, such as China, India, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, South Africa, and Kenya. Additionally, some will serve in Permanent Missions to international bodies like the United Nations, UNESCO, and the African Union. The specific diplomatic assignments for all nominees will be finalized following their confirmation by the Senate, with further ambassadorial announcements anticipated in due course.
