Ewan McGregor Wants Another Obi-Wan Kenobi Return — But Disney Hasn't Said Yes
Ewan McGregor has expressed a strong desire to reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi, suggesting more stories to tell during the Jedi's ten years of exile. The Star Wars franchise, currently in an uncertain state, could explore a second season or even film appearances for Kenobi, potentially drawing on canonical events like his reunion with Darth Maul.
Ewan McGregor isn't ready to put down Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber just yet.
The Star Wars actor has again expressed his desire to return as the legendary Jedi, arguing that there is still a decade of Obi-Wan's life that could be explored between the events of his Disney+ series and Star Wars: A New Hope.
Speaking in a new interview with Esquire, McGregor made it clear that he believes there is more story to tell.
“There's 10 years of something happening to Obi-Wan,” he said, referring to the period before Alec Guinness' version of the character appears in the original 1977 film.
But fans hoping that his comments mean Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 is already happening should temper their expectations.
McGregor acknowledged that “nothing's really moving on that front,” meaning there is currently no confirmed second season despite his enthusiasm about returning.
The actor even directed part of his appeal towards Disney leadership, making little secret of his willingness to pick up the character again if Lucasfilm finds the right story.
McGregor first played Obi-Wan in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace in 1999 before returning for Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.
More than 15 years later, he reprised the role in Disney+'s six-episode Obi-Wan Kenobi series in 2022.
The show followed a traumatised Kenobi living in hiding after the fall of the Jedi Order and eventually reunited him with Hayden Christensen's Darth Vader.
That reunion also presents a challenge for any potential continuation.
Another season would have to find a compelling reason to bring Obi-Wan out of isolation without undermining his eventual position on Tatooine or creating contradictions with the original Star Wars trilogy.
One possibility already exists within established Star Wars lore.
The animated series Star Wars Rebels featured a memorable confrontation between an older Obi-Wan and Darth Maul on Tatooine. A future live-action project could potentially explore events surrounding that encounter, although Lucasfilm has announced no such adaptation.
McGregor's comments arrive as Disney reassesses the future of one of Hollywood's biggest franchises.
Lucasfilm has several Star Wars projects at various stages of development, but Disney has become more selective about how frequently new films and television series from the franchise are released.
Disney CEO Bob Iger previously acknowledged that the company had produced too much Marvel and Star Wars content, contributing to a strategy of placing greater emphasis on quality rather than sheer volume. Disney has subsequently discussed reducing output from its major franchises.
That makes McGregor's potential return interesting, but far from guaranteed.
For now, there is no confirmed second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi and no announced new Star Wars movie starring McGregor.
What fans do have is something considerably simpler: the actor who has played Obi-Wan for more than two decades still wants another chance to say, “Hello there.”
