The largest animals on Earth are not found on land, they exist beneath the surface of the ocean.

With a wingspan that can exceed 9 metres, the giant oceanic manta ray is the largest species of ray.

It moves through the water with a smooth, gliding motion and is considered one of the more intelligent fish species.

4. Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus)

The sperm whale is thelargest toothed predator on Earth.

It is capable of diving to extreme depths in search of prey such as squid and uses powerfulsound waves to navigate in the deep ocean.

Also known as the killer whale, the orca is technically adolphin but functions as an apex predator.

Why do ocean animals grow so large?

The ocean provides conditions that allow animals to grow much larger than most land species.
