Tesla's Charging Dominance Grows: Porsche, Audi Join the Great NACS Migration!

The automotive industry is currently undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) revolution. Major automakers are strategically planning to electrify a substantial portion of their vehicle lineups by 2030, with regions like California and New York already legislating against the sale of new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2035. While this shift is seen as beneficial for the environment, it presents a critical challenge related to infrastructure, particularly the availability and reliability of charging networks. Many manufacturers are now looking to Tesla, a former rival, for assistance in addressing this issue, specifically by adopting its North American Charging Standard (NACS) port and Supercharger network.
Tesla's Supercharger EV charging network is widely acknowledged as the industry's best, boasting the largest footprint with approximately 23,500 stations. This extensive network significantly alleviates range anxiety for EV owners and is generally more reliable than competing DC fast charging networks. Critically, its use of the NACS port has led to it becoming the de facto industry standard, prompting numerous automakers to integrate NACS into their vehicles, either by switching to NACS ports directly or by offering adapters to access Tesla’s NACS-based chargers.
Porsche and Audi are the latest additions to the list of NACS adopters, with their electric vehicles gaining access to the Tesla Supercharger network through newly supplied factory adapters. However, there are specific conditions and requirements for owners.
For Audi, most E-tron owners will soon be able to utilize the Supercharger network. New 2025 model year E-trons, specifically the Q6 E-tron, A6 Sportback E-tron, and E-Tron GT, which are currently arriving at dealerships, will include an Audi factory-supplied NACS to J1772-CCS adapter as an accessory. It is crucial to note that this adapter is exclusively for DC fast charging systems and is not compatible with Level 2 home or destination AC chargers that use the NACS plug. Audi plans to inform existing E-Tron owners about obtaining these adapters in the near future, though Q4 E-tron owners may not have immediate access. For eligible E-Tron owners, Tesla stations will appear as Points of Interest (POI) in the MyAudi app and Audi MMI navigation. To initiate and pay for charging at a Tesla Supercharger, the Tesla App will be required.
Porsche EV owners will follow a similar process to gain Tesla Supercharger access. They will need a Porsche factory-supplied NACS to J1772-CCS adapter, also intended solely for DC fast charging networks. Initially, owners will use the Tesla App for charging initiation and payment, but Porsche anticipates a transition to the My Porsche app in the coming months. The adapter will be provided free of charge to buyers of 2026 model year Taycan and Macan EVs. Owners of prior model year Taycan and all Macan vehicles will also receive a complimentary adapter, but must wait for notification via their My Porsche app. In a distinct arrangement, owners of 2024 and older Taycan models can acquire an adapter immediately by purchasing it for $185 (plus applicable taxes and shipping) from either the Porsche online shop or a local dealer.
This widespread adoption by prominent brands like Porsche and Audi underscores the accelerating industry-wide shift towards Tesla's NACS standard, marking a significant step in developing a more unified and accessible EV charging infrastructure.
