Tech Titans Unite: Nadella Unveils $17.5B AI Data Center in India After High-Profile Meetings

Microsoft Corp. has significantly bolstered its commitment to India's burgeoning digital economy, announcing a massive $17.5 billion investment in data centers. This commitment, made by CEO Satya Nadella on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, during his second visit of the year to India, elevates Microsoft’s total investment pledges in the country for 2025 to $20.5 billion. The total includes a prior $3 billion initiative announced in January 2025, focused on building artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and providing essential skilling. This latest investment marks Microsoft's largest in Asia to date and encompasses the establishment of a new data center in Hyderabad, projected to open by June 2026, alongside the expansion of its three existing data centers located in Chennai, Mumbai, and Pune. Additionally, Microsoft formally rolled out its sovereign cloud offerings, designed to serve both government clients and private enterprises, and pledged to train an additional 10 million people in AI skills, aiming for a cumulative total of 20 million individuals trained in Microsoft's AI tools.

Satya Nadella's visit included a productive discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, where they deliberated on India's AI roadmap and growth priorities. PM Modi lauded India as the destination for Microsoft's largest Asian investment, expressing optimism that Indian youth would leverage this opportunity for innovation and AI-driven advancements. Following his meeting with PM Modi, Nadella also met with Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani. Adani later revealed on social media that he received a personal demo from Nadella of AI applications being developed at Microsoft. Their discussion centered on the vast potential of AI in the physical world and fostering a '360° partnership' as physical and digital realms converge.

India's immense potential in AI and data centers is attracting substantial investments from major global technology players. Microsoft's latest commitment is part of a broader trend, with Big Tech's AI-centric data center investment plans in the country for 2025 reaching an estimated $42.5 billion. This includes Google's $15 billion investment for a 1 gigawatt (GW) AI data center in Visakhapatnam, announced on October 14, and Amazon Web Services' (AWS) $7 billion plan for data centers in Telangana, declared on January 23. OpenAI, a leading AI startup, is also expected to invest nearly $7 billion for its own 1GW data center in India. Domestic conglomerates are not far behind, with Reliance Industries Ltd announcing an $11 billion investment for a 1GW data center through its Digital Connexion joint venture. Larsen & Toubro Ltd committed nearly $3 billion for 300 megawatt (MW) data center capacity, with future expansion plans, while the Tata group, through Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS), will invest $7 billion in a 1GW data center facility.

The strategic importance of sovereign cloud solutions, which involve storing and processing data within a country's borders, is a key focus for all AI and cloud service providers. This is driven by data-localization requirements, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare and financial services. Microsoft's deep-rooted presence in India and its reputation for compliance and security position it favorably to capitalize on the increasing adoption of AI at scale, despite its AI journey primarily involving a partnership with OpenAI rather than solely developing foundational capabilities internally.

Beyond Microsoft, Prime Minister Modi also engaged with other prominent global tech leaders on December 9, 2025. He held separate meetings with Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar and Chairman and Managing Director S Rajesh Varrier, discussing the company's partnership in futuristic sectors, its commitment to boosting AI adoption, and advancing education and skill development in India. Cognizant reaffirmed its commitment to India and plans to expand into emerging cities. Similarly, PM Modi met Intel Corporation CEO Lip-Bu Tan, welcoming Intel's dedication to India's semiconductor journey and supporting the India Semiconductor Mission, further solidifying India's position as a global hub for technology and innovation.
