Tax Turmoil: Political Parties Challenge Federal Government on Discrepancies

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has issued a strong appeal to the federal government, urging an immediate resolution to what it describes as alleged discrepancies within the newly gazetted tax law before its official implementation. IPAC emphasized that the credibility, clarity, and public acceptance of any law are paramount to its effectiveness and its potential contribution to national development. The Council warned that a failure to address these inconsistencies could lead to increased tension and an erosion of public confidence, asserting that such issues must be tackled urgently.
Concurrently, as the country celebrated the 2025 Christmas season, IPAC called upon Nigerians to embrace prayers, tolerance, unity, and patriotism. In a Christmas Day statement signed by its national publicity secretary, Comrade Egbeola Wale Martins, IPAC joined Christians nationwide in commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. The Council characterized the season as a crucial time for sober reflection on the enduring values of love, peace, tolerance, and goodwill towards humanity. Christians were encouraged to utilize this festive period to renew their faith and recommit to selfless service, particularly as Nigeria navigates a challenging phase that necessitates collective prayers and national solidarity.
Furthermore, IPAC implored the Federal Government to be responsive to the yearnings of Nigerians by taking prompt and decisive steps to alleviate the prevailing economic and social hardships confronting citizens. The Council referenced Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which clearly stipulates that the security and welfare of the people constitute the primary purpose of government. IPAC underscored that at this critical juncture, Nigerians both desire and deserve tangible dividends of democracy, stressing that the welfare of citizens must remain paramount in all government policies and actions, as sovereignty ultimately resides with the people.
Despite the current challenges facing the nation, IPAC expressed unwavering optimism about Nigeria’s future. The Council conveyed its confidence that a shared unity of purpose and genuine patriotism can effectively help in building the nation to fulfill the collective aspirations of its citizens, paving the way for a strong, united, equitable, prosperous, and just democratic society.
