Super Eagles Snub Shocker: Olise's Controversial Call-Up Drama Unfolds

Nigerian football has frequently grappled with the challenge and opportunity of integrating dual-nationality players into its national team, the Super Eagles. During his tenure as head coach from 2016 to 2021, Gernot Rohr, appointed by former Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick, made significant efforts to bolster the squad with such talents. Under Rohr’s leadership, the Super Eagles achieved the distinction of being the first African team to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, though they exited at the group stage. He also guided the team to a bronze medal at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations before his departure in 2021.
Despite successes in convincing players like Cyriel Dessers, Ola Aina, Maduka Okoye, Joe Aribo, and Semi Ajayi to commit to Nigeria, some prominent targets chose otherwise. One such player was Michael Olise, born in England to a British-Nigerian father and a French-Algerian mother. Rohr recounted his and assistant Tunde Adelakun's efforts in 2019 to recruit Olise while he was at Reading. Olise, however, declined, seemingly anticipating a significant future with an European national team. His decision led him to represent France, where he progressed through the youth ranks and eventually joined the senior team. Olise has since blossomed into a global star, notably after his 2024 move to Bayern Munich, forming a potent attacking trio with Harry Kane and Luis Diaz. With 15 senior appearances and four goals for France, he is poised for a major role in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a tournament Nigeria will unfortunately miss, leaving many to reflect on the missed opportunity.
