Super Eagles Roar for 2026 WCQ Playoffs: Okocha & Aghahowa Rally Stars for Gabon Showdown!

The Nigerian Super Eagles are facing a crucial period as they prepare for a 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash against Gabon. The team's qualification for this stage was hard-fought, having barely secured a spot as one of the best runners-up from the Africa zone following a challenging qualifying series.
Amidst the preparations, former Super Eagles captain, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, has voiced concerns regarding the team's perceived loss of its 'fear factor'. Speaking on The Exchange with Femi Soneye, Okocha lamented, “In our home, back then, there were no questions; no matter who you were, it was a matter of how many.” He emphasized that Nigeria's home ground used to be a fortress, but now, he believes the team is weaker at home, and other nations are no longer intimidated to play against them. “We’ve lost that fear factor. Nations used to be scared to play against Nigeria. Now, people want to play against us,” Okocha stated.
Adding to the sentiment of high stakes, former Super Eagles striker, Julius Aghahowa, has urged the players to demonstrate unwavering sacrifice and give 120 percent effort in the upcoming playoff. Aghahowa stressed the immense pressure on Nigeria to secure a ticket for next year’s World Cup, advising the Super Eagles to approach the playoffs one game at a time. During an interview with AySuga Channel, he reiterated, “We have to take each game as they come. The next game has to be the most important game, after that, the next one will be the most important one. So, the pressure is high. So everybody invited to come and play in the remaining games must bring their A game. They must be fit, ready to sacrifice and be ready to give 120 per cent, if we really want to go to the World Cup.”
The highly anticipated Nigeria versus Gabon match is scheduled for Thursday evening, with a kick-off time of 5 pm. The venue for this critical encounter is the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex in Rabat, Morocco.
As of now, eighteen players have arrived at the Super Eagles’ camp in Rabat. The camp officially opened on Sunday, with head coach Eric Chelle’s side holding their first training session on Monday. Among the players already participating in training are prominent figures such as captain William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, and Benjamin Fredrick. Other notable players in camp include Wilfred Ndidi, Stanley Nwabali, Tolu Arokodare, Alex Iwobi, Chidozie Awaziem, Ejuke Chidera, Olakunle Olusegun, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Amas Obasogie, Semi Ajayi, Ademola Lookman, Akor Adams, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Raphael Onyedika. The remaining three players expected to join the squad are anticipated to arrive before the crucial match against Gabon on Thursday.
