Super Eagles Erupt: Osimhen Threatens Exit After Fiery Clash With Lookman!

Nigeria's dominant 4-0 victory over Mozambique, which successfully secured the Super Eagles a place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), was significantly overshadowed by a dramatic on-field disagreement and subsequent fallout involving star forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. The incident, which escalated after the final whistle, threatened to destabilize the team's promising AFCON campaign.
The tension began in the second half of the encounter during a highly productive outing for Osimhen, who had already netted two goals, both exquisitely set up by Lookman. However, in the 64th minute, Osimhen became visibly frustrated when Lookman opted against passing the ball to him during a promising attacking move. His reaction was immediate and intense; he openly vented his anger at Lookman, with teammates, officials, and spectators witnessing the exchange. Osimhen was later seen gesturing repeatedly towards the Super Eagles' bench, signaling his desire to be substituted, a move reflecting growing frustration rather than any injury concern.
The confrontation on the pitch escalated when Osimhen approached Lookman aggressively while the latter walked over to take a corner, pointing in his face. Captain Wilfred Ndidi attempted to intervene, but Osimhen reportedly slapped his arm away. In a surreal turn of events, it was Mozambique defender Reinildo who stepped in to separate the two players. Head coach Eric Chelle eventually withdrew Osimhen from the match, replacing him with Moses Simon, as Nigeria comfortably saw out the game to secure all three points.
However, the situation reportedly worsened after the final whistle. Osimhen is said to have stormed out of the stadium in a visibly agitated state, dropping his accreditation card in the process. Witnesses claimed the striker repeatedly declared he was “done” with the national team and expressed a desire to immediately return to Turkey, where he is currently on loan with Galatasaray. He was later observed sitting alone on the team bus while his teammates were still in the dressing room. This dramatic exit sparked significant concern among team officials, given Osimhen's crucial role in Nigeria's AFCON aspirations.
Senior officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) swiftly intervened, engaging the striker in private discussions in a bid to de-escalate the situation. Reports indicate that the NFF president personally tried to calm Osimhen, though some officials believed he should be given space to cool off. This episode also revived concerns about Osimhen's temperament, following a public clash with former coach Finidi George in June 2024.
Ademola Lookman, meanwhile, adopted a calmer approach. During the on-field exchange, he responded by calmly pointing out Osimhen’s two goals. In the post-match press conference, Lookman dismissed suggestions of a serious rift, insisting there was no issue within the squad and referring to Osimhen as "our number one guy" and "a top striker." To further defuse the growing tension, Lookman made a deliberate public gesture of unity by posting a series of photographs of himself and Osimhen together on social media, accompanied by the simple message: “Together always.”
Other senior figures in the squad, including Captain Wilfred Ndidi and Moses Simon, also attempted to play down the incident, insisting Osimhen’s reaction was not unusual. Super Eagles media officer Promise Efoghe further insisted that the situation inside the camp remained calm and under control, confirming that the primary reasons behind the exchange had been resolved swiftly among the players and coaching staff. Officials urged Super Eagles fans and media to disregard reports suggesting lingering tension or division.
The incident casts a long shadow over what should have been a reassuring night for Nigeria, boosting their status as serious contenders. Lookman has been Nigeria’s standout performer at the tournament, with seven goal contributions, while Osimhen is just three goals shy of Rashidi Yekini’s all-time national scoring record. Nigeria are performing strongly on the pitch, but this crisis off it could yet define their AFCON campaign as they prepare for a high-stakes quarter-final match against either DR Congo or Algeria, two nations with a history of inflicting painful memories on the Super Eagles in past tournaments.
In other camp news, speculation surrounding Akor Adams’ brief absence from the team hotel was dismissed. Media officer Efoghe clarified that Adams briefly stepped out to see his parents, who were nearby, and returned to camp within an hour, remaining fully integrated with the squad without any disciplinary issues. Additionally, the team is set to hold a recovery session at the Sardienne Complex, with defender Ryan Alebiosu continuing an individual recovery program due to injury.
