Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle's Future in Doubt After 'Lucky' AFCON Win

One month after Nigeria’s commanding 2-0 quarter-final victory over Algeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has revisited a highly debated moment from the match. The Malian tactician candidly highlighted a crucial VAR decision that, he admits, could have dramatically altered the contest. Both sides had entered the knockout clash in Morocco with unbeaten records, setting the stage for what was anticipated to be a tight and tactical encounter.
Instead, Nigeria delivered one of their most dominant performances of the tournament, securing the win with goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams. Despite the decisive scoreline, the match's early moments hinged on a key incident while the game was still goalless. Algeria appealed for a penalty after a dangerous cross from the right struck defender Semi Ajayi’s arm inside the box. Following an immediate VAR check, officials ruled that the ball had first rebounded off Ajayi’s thigh before making contact with his hand, leading to the dismissal of the penalty appeal.
This decision sparked widespread debate among fans and analysts at the time, and Chelle now confesses it could easily have gone the other way. Speaking to RMC Sports, the Nigerian coach addressed the controversial moment with refreshing honesty. “They could have called the handball. We were lucky on that one,” he admitted, clearly recalling a moment that held the potential to change the entire course of the match. Chelle further stressed the critical nature of such moments in high-stakes knockout football, noting, “At this stage, if Algeria scores and takes a 1-0 lead, the game is no longer the same. They take control of the ball and gain momentum.”
The victory over Algeria propelled the Super Eagles into the semi-finals, marking their fifth consecutive win of the tournament. However, their impressive winning run eventually stalled against hosts Morocco, who edged them out on penalties following a goalless draw after extra time. Nigeria concluded their campaign strongly, securing the bronze medal by defeating Egypt in the third-place playoff, also on penalties, thus capping off an impressive AFCON showing.
In the aftermath of AFCON 2025, speculation mounted regarding Eric Chelle's future as the Super Eagles head coach. While he successfully guided the team to a third-place finish, many observers believed Nigeria was the best team in the tournament, evidenced by their distinction as the highest-scoring side with 14 goals in six matches and their exciting brand of football. Rumors linked Chelle with potential coaching roles for the Algerian and Tunisian national teams, suggesting he might lead either side to the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations.
However, these concrete moves from the speculation have been addressed by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau. Gusau unequivocally confirmed that Eric Chelle will remain the Super Eagles head coach, clarifying that Chelle still has a year left on his contract and is not obliged to leave until it expires. The NFF President emphasized the importance of avoiding distractions for Chelle, stating, “we don't want to bring some distraction on him because we quite well understand that he enjoys working with Nigeria.”
Gusau further elaborated that a coach's decision is not solely about securing more money from another team, but also about the potential for achieving results. He questioned whether a move to another team, despite a higher salary, would guarantee success if they lack the quality players, or
