Stranger Things 5 Storms Netflix Records — But Can It Top the Squid Game Phenomenon?

"Stranger Things 5" has exploded onto Netflix with a premiere that has turned global streaming charts completely upside down. The final season of the beloved sci-fi series debuted to extraordinary numbers, instantly positioning itself as one of the most dominant releases in Netflix history and reinforcing its status as a cultural juggernaut.
Within just five days, Part 1 of the season amassed more than 59.6 million views, making it the second-largest season launch ever recorded on the platform—behind only the unstoppable success of Squid Game Season 2. This figure also marks the strongest debut for any English-language Netflix series, surpassing previous records set by the streamer’s biggest franchises and further solidifying Netflix’s reputation as the home of global tentpole television.
The momentum behind Season 5 represents a staggering surge from the performance of Season 4. While the previous installment opened at about 22 million views (converted from 287 million hours), this season’s debut reflects a dramatic jump of roughly 171%. Anticipation was so intense that all four preceding seasons returned to Netflix’s global Top 10 ahead of the premiere—a rare achievement and a first for a Netflix series. During the week of Nov. 24–30, Season 5 secured the No. 1 spot, with Seasons 1, 4, 2, and 3 also charting, showcasing the franchise’s enduring strength across every installment.
Internationally, the series demonstrated overwhelming dominance. "Stranger Things 5" ranked No. 1 in 91 of the 93 countries where Netflix is available, a commanding 98% success rate. Only South Korea, led by the drama Taxi Driver, and Japan, where One Punch Man reigned supreme, resisted the Hawkins takeover. Even so, the near-universal success underscores the Duffer Brothers’ enduring global influence and the franchise’s widespread cultural footprint.
Critical reception, while broadly positive, has been the most divided of the franchise so far. On Rotten Tomatoes, the new season holds an 84% critics’ score and 85% audience score—still strong but the lowest in the show’s run. Reviewer Robert Brian Taylor praised the opening four episodes as an 8/10, noting that the Duffers are “ending their series on their own terms,” bringing thematic closure while honoring the show’s original emotional core.
With only four episodes released so far, excitement continues to build. Three more episodes arrive on Christmas Day, followed by the series finale on New Year’s Eve—timed perfectly to dominate holiday streaming. Given Season 4’s ranking as the third-most popular English-language Netflix title of all time, with 140.7 million views in its first 91 days, Season 5 is strongly positioned to finish among Netflix’s premier performers.
As Netflix’s most iconic English-language series enters its final chapter, the biggest question remains: will "Stranger Things 5" ultimately surpass the global phenomenon of Squid Game? With powerful momentum, massive fan engagement, and worldwide anticipation, the battle for Netflix’s streaming crown has only just begun.
