Storm Claudia Strikes: Devastating Winds Injure Many, Clean-Up Underway

Emergency services are continuing to manage the severe aftermath of Storm Claudia, which brought torrential rain and strong winds across the UK. A major incident was declared in Monmouth, south-east Wales, where numerous individuals were rescued or evacuated from their homes due to widespread flooding on Friday. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) maintained four severe flood warnings on Sunday morning, indicating a danger to life, while 41 flood warnings were active across England. River levels on the Monnow in Wales reached unprecedented heights, surpassing those recorded during Storm Dennis in 2020 and Storm Bert last year, according to NRW. The Welsh government reported significant flooding had impacted homes, businesses, transport, and energy infrastructure in parts of Wales.
In England, the Environment Agency confirmed that 20 properties had flooded as a result of Storm Claudia, including some in Cumbria. As the storm recedes, a notable cold snap is sweeping across the UK. Temperatures plummeted, with Saturday night marking the coldest in the UK since March 20, reaching -7C in Tulloch Bridge, Scotland, as reported by the Met Office. This significant drop follows a prolonged period of above-average temperatures for November.
Dan Holley, the Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist, explained that as Storm Claudia moves south, high pressure from the north-west will usher in a cold northerly flow directly from the Arctic. This shift will introduce much colder conditions, with a risk of wintry hazards such as snow and ice. Widespread frosts are anticipated across the UK, with temperatures potentially dipping as low as -7C in some areas next week. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain in single figures nationwide. A brisk northerly wind will also contribute to a marked wind chill, signaling a significant change in weather patterns.
In response to the colder conditions, the UK Health Security Agency issued a cold weather warning for parts of the Midlands and northern England, effective from Monday morning until Friday morning. This alert covers the East Midlands, West Midlands, North East, North West, and Yorkshire and The Humber. The Environment Agency has also cautioned that flooding is expected to persist throughout the weekend.
Separately, a man in Ashton, Tameside, sustained serious injuries in an incident involving a tree following the stormy weather. On Saturday afternoon, November 15, the man attempted to cut away part of a fallen tree to make it safe. While doing so, a stump fell, knocking him off his ladder. Emergency services, including police, paramedics, and fire crews, attended the scene on Wood Lane, with the air ambulance also landing nearby. Greater Manchester Police confirmed the man is hospitalized with serious injuries, and no crime is suspected.
