Star Wars Exclusive: Kylo Ren's Sequel Trilogy Gaps Finally Addressed
Charles Soule's Star Wars comics further explore the complex character of Kylo Ren, building on Adam Driver's portrayal from the sequel trilogy. Through series like "The Rise of Kylo Ren" and the ongoing "The Fall of Kylo Ren," Soule delves into Ben Solo's descent into darkness and his mindset after crucial events, filling narrative gaps and adding significant nuance to the character's journey.
Kylo Ren, portrayed by Adam Driver, emerged as one of the most enduring modern characters from the often-contentious Star Wars sequel trilogy. Driver's standout performance masterfully captured the emotional depth of Ben Solo, the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, whose turn to the dark side culminated in his becoming the Supreme Leader of the First Order. His character arc, marked by a final confrontation with his father, internal struggles between light and dark, and a redemptive sacrifice, provided a layered antagonist worthy of following Darth Vader.
Despite the films, much of Kylo Ren's story remained untold, a void now being addressed through Star Wars comics. Famed "Daredevil" writer Charles Soule has significantly contributed to fleshing out Ben Solo's journey. In 2019, Soule penned "The Rise of Kylo Ren" for Marvel Comics, a limited series that meticulously depicted Ben Solo's fall to the Dark Side and his transformation into Kylo Ren under Supreme Leader Snoke, alongside the Knights of Ren. This series starkly illustrated how even the Light's greatest hope could be insidiously drawn down a path of evil. Prior to this, "The Legacy of Vader" explored the Skywalker family's grappling with Anakin's grandson's legacy.
More recently, Soule has returned to the period between "The Last Jedi" and "The Rise of Skywalker" with "The Fall of Kylo Ren." This series delves into how the villain forged his own tyrannical path. Soule, as a fan himself, approaches expanding Star Wars characters' stories by addressing unresolved questions from the films and TV shows. He described his process in an interview, noting that for "The Fall of Kylo Ren," he focused on Kylo Ren's mindset immediately after Episode VIII, following devastating losses such as killing his father and his confrontations with Rey and Luke Skywalker. Given that "Episodes VII" and "VIII" span only a week or two, this short but intense period offered rich narrative potential for a young man experiencing such profound, life-altering events.
Soule's work on Star Wars canon is a collaborative effort with Lucasfilm and Marvel. He found both parties highly receptive to his ideas, especially those that built upon the implications of the sequel trilogy and aimed to fill narrative gaps. This guidance and creative freedom allowed him to add significant nuance to Ben Solo's gradual descent into darkness, thereby enriching Kylo Ren's character in retrospect.
The ongoing "The Fall of Kylo Ren" is a five-issue series, with Issue #3 scheduled for release on October 21. This installment will see the Supreme Leader forcibly bringing the Knights of Ren under his command. The narrative also promises to explore dire threats to his flagship, the scheming of Generals Hux and Pryde, and the uncovering of the shadowy organization's secrets, including its connection to a dark artifact and an undying, ever-improving droid. Soule continues to collaborate with artist Will Sliney on this comic, which is slated to conclude this year.
