Star-Studded Premiere: Julia Roberts, Garfield, Edebiri Electrify NYFF 2025 Opening

The 63rd annual New York Film Festival commenced with dazzling fanfare on Friday, September 26, 2025, at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. Director Luca Guadagnino, resplendent in a sequined gray suit jacket, captivated the audience as he introduced his latest cinematic endeavor, "After the Hunt." This psychological thriller was the focal point of the opening night, drawing anticipation from critics and cinephiles alike.
Guadagnino's "After the Hunt" delves into a complex narrative centered around Alma, a college professor portrayed by Julia Roberts. Alma's life takes a tumultuous turn when her protégé, Maggie (Ayo Edebiri), levels an accusation of sexual assault against Alma’s close friend and colleague, Hank (Andrew Garfield). The film is intentionally crafted to be ambiguous, steering clear of simplistic black-and-white scenarios, aiming instead to provoke deep discussion and engagement from its viewers.
During the introduction, Julia Roberts shared a heartfelt moment with the audience, reflecting on her long connection to the city. "I moved to New York when I was 17 years old — and I’m 57. This is top 3 great achievements of my New York life. So thank you so much for having us," she remarked, emphasizing the significance of the event for her. Following Roberts's brief address, Guadagnino returned to the podium, passionately stating that the film was "made to make you talk about it and fight over it, and be laughing and being desperate and happy," setting the stage for a thought-provoking experience.
The premiere saw a strong turnout from the film's talent, including co-stars Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri, and Michael Stuhlbarg, alongside screenwriter Nora Garrett. Julia Roberts’ niece, Emma Roberts, was also among the notable guests. Screenwriter Nora Garrett offered insights into the film’s creation, specifically highlighting a pivotal scene between Andrew Garfield’s character, Hank Gibson, and Julia Roberts’ character, Alma, in her classroom. Garrett noted that it was Garfield's first day on set, and he "just knocked it out of the park," eliciting a strong emotional response from her.
Garrett also elaborated on her approach to crafting the film’s morally complex dialogue. Drawing from her background as an actor, she explained her philosophy: "You have to be on your character’s side — even if they’re doing things that you don’t agree with. It’s not about judging your character. It’s about trying to find a place of commonality and work from there." She applied this same principle to the dialogue, hoping to achieve a nuanced and empathetic portrayal of the characters' perspectives.
After the screening, attendees proceeded to the elegant Tavern on the Green for the official afterparty. Guests indulged in a selection of gourmet bites, including mini lobster rolls, assorted meat skewers, and fingerling potatoes. Director Luca Guadagnino arrived approximately an hour into the reception, still sporting his distinctive glittering ensemble, maintaining the night's celebratory atmosphere.
"After the Hunt" is scheduled for a limited theatrical release in the U.S. on October 10, with a wider release following on October 17, inviting a broader audience to engage with its compelling and challenging narrative.
