South Africa's Gautrain Makes Travel Accessible: Klevamova Spurs Growth
The Gautrain's KlevaMova affordability product, launched in May 2025, has garnered significant interest within its first year, attracting nearly 15,000 applicants. This initiative, designed to make Gautrain travel more accessible, now accounts for approximately 11% of all Gautrain passenger trips, demonstrating its growing impact on public transportation in Gauteng.
KlevaMova offers a substantial 50% discount on Gautrain fares to qualifying individuals and households. The product targets households earning R350,000 or less annually, along with scholars, pensioners, and recipients of South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) disability grants. As of its first anniversary, around 6,000 approved users are actively utilizing the system, having successfully completed the necessary verification process.
Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela highlighted the increasing demand for affordable and reliable public transport in the region, noting that KlevaMova is successfully reaching lower-income commuters. Specifically, it has proven particularly beneficial for young working adults under 40 who fall within the R350,000 income bracket. A significant 94% of KlevaMova users across all categories are workers, underscoring the vital role affordable transport plays in connecting people to economic opportunities.
Geographically, passenger usage has been highest from the Tshwane region, with Hatfield, Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand, and Rhodesfield identified as the busiest originating stations. Sandton Station, on the other hand, consistently remains the leading destination for KlevaMova users. The discounted product is conveniently available in various packages, including weekly, monthly, and return-trip options. Prospective applicants are required to submit supporting documentation and undergo a verification process to access these benefits.
KlevaMova is part of a broader strategic effort by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and the Gautrain Management Agency. This initiative aims to improve access to safe, reliable, and efficient public transport while actively reducing affordability barriers across Gauteng. It also supports Gautrain's larger goal of establishing itself as an aspirational mobility brand that combines world-class service with enhanced affordability and accessibility for a wider spectrum of commuters. This aligns with findings from the Gauteng Household Travel Survey (2019/20), which revealed that nearly 60% of households spend more than the recommended 10% of their monthly income on transport.
Members of the public interested in applying for the KlevaMova product can find more information and application details by visiting the official Gautrain website or contacting the Gautrain toll-free call centre at 0800 428 87246.
