South Africa is marking Youth Day on June 16, a public holiday that commemorates the courage of young people during the 1976 Soweto Uprising.

Thousands of black students protested against the apartheid government's decision to impose Afrikaans in township schools.

The peaceful demonstration turned tragic when police intervened, leading to the deaths of more than 500 youths.

Their sacrifice became a powerful symbol of resistance against apartheid and helped advance the struggle for equality.

Since the advent of democracy in 1994, June 16 has been observed as National Youth Day, with the entire month recognized as Youth Month.

South Africa will observe 14 public holidays in 2026, but only 13 will be effectively enjoyed by most workers.

This is because Human Rights Day (March 21) and Day of Goodwill (December 26) fall on Saturdays, while National Women’s Day falls on a Sunday, making Monday, August 10, an additional public holiday.

From Tuesday afternoon, which is Youth Day, through to Saturday, several parts of the country will experience windy, cooler, and unsettled weather conditions.

This weather system, linked to a surface high-pressure system, will initially impact the western regions of South Africa before progressively moving eastward over the course of the week.

As the system advances, it is forecast to spread its effects to the Free State and the western half of the Eastern Cape.

By Friday and Saturday, the North West, Gauteng, and neighboring provinces may also begin to feel the impact.

Residents in the affected areas should brace for a combination of strong winds, noticeably cooler temperatures, and generally unsettled atmospheric conditions as the system traverses the country.

SAWS emphasizes the need for caution, especially for motorists, as strong winds can create hazardous driving conditions.

Furthermore, the weather service has highlighted an elevated risk of veld fires, particularly across the western interior, where the combination of strong to fresh winds could lead to the rapid spread of any fires that ignite.

SAWS will continue to monitor the weather system's development and provide further updates and warnings as necessary.
