Shockwaves: Retired General Dies in Bandits' Den, Family Debunks Official Cause

The abduction and subsequent death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar in Katsina State has ignited a fierce debate over the cause of his demise and raised significant concerns about the escalating security challenges in northern Nigeria. General Abubakar, a former army spokesperson and Director of Defence Information, was abducted alongside his wife, Amina Abubakar, and their driver, Abdullahi Sa’idu, on May 30, 2026, while traveling along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in the Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Conflicting accounts surround General Abubakar's death while in captivity. The Katsina State Government announced on Saturday, following his death, that he succumbed to complications related to diabetes and high blood pressure. However, his son, Isyaka Rabe, vehemently rejected these claims in an interview with Deutsche Welle, stating that his father had no history of either condition. Isyaka suggested that a heart attack might have been the cause, or even a snake bite, a theory also supported by his sister, Adda Abubakar, on her X handle. The family expressed skepticism about the government's narrative, noting some people believed he was bitten by a snake based on a video released by the kidnappers, while others recalled him walking before his death, leaving the true cause in question to divine knowledge.

Adding to the family's distress, Isyaka Rabe confirmed that his mother, Amina Abubakar, remains in captivity, dismissing social media claims of her release. The status and whereabouts of the abducted driver, Abdullahi Sa’idu, also remain unconfirmed. The kidnappers had reportedly demanded the release of three detained fighters and the return of livestock allegedly seized during security operations in exchange for the couple’s freedom. Isyaka also revealed that the family was not informed about the circumstances of his father’s body recovery, directing such questions to the government.

The tragic incident has drawn strong reactions from political figures. Former vice-president Atiku Abubakar voiced concerns about the country’s security situation. President Bola Tinubu expressed shock over General Abubakar's death and offered condolences to his family, the Katsina State government, and the armed forces. President Tinubu, through his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, reaffirmed the government's steadfast commitment to never negotiating with terrorists or bowing to their demands to release detained members. He urged bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror to surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State, emphasizing that no mercy would be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians, and calling the death a defining moment in the battle against terror.

In response to the escalating insecurity, the Defense Headquarters’ Joint Task Force North West, under Operation Fansan Yamma, launched a major offensive operation codenamed Operation Clean Sweep III on June 14, 2026. This operation targets terrorists and bandits operating in Matazu Local Government Area and neighboring communities in Katsina State, coming days after General Abubakar's death in captivity. Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Media Information Officer of JTF North West Operation Fansan Yamma, stated that the operation aims to locate and neutralize those responsible for the attack, dismantle criminal networks, and restore security. Troops have since conducted aggressive fighting patrols, intelligence-led raids, cordon-and-search operations, and clearance missions in identified terrorist hideouts and suspected criminal enclaves, achieving significant successes around the Dikkawa Hills. The military is collaborating with sister services, other security agencies, and local stakeholders, urging public support with credible information to apprehend criminal elements and assuring sustained pressure on terrorists until the objectives of Operation Clean Sweep III are fully achieved.
