Police Inspector Killed Inside Imo Commissioner’s Residence as Two Suspects Arrested
A police inspector was tragically killed during an armed invasion of an Imo State commissioner's residence in Owerri. Police have confirmed the incident, launched an investigation, and arrested two suspects, while assuring residents of enhanced security measures.
Armed men invaded the Owerri residence of Imo State Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Rex Anunobi, on Monday morning, killing a police inspector assigned to guard the property. The victim, identified as Inspector Henry Effiong, was reportedly disarmed before the attackers took his rifle and mobile phones and fatally shot him.
The incident occurred in Owerri, the Imo State capital, in south-east Nigeria. The Imo State Police Command, through its spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Wednesday, saying Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso ordered a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify the attackers.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) and the DPO of the New Owerri Division visited the scene, conducted examinations, recovered relevant exhibits and secured them for further analysis, while the inspector’s remains were deposited at a mortuary.
Okoye conveyed Commissioner Bosso’s condolences to Inspector Effiong’s family, assuring them that the command would work to bring those responsible to justice. He also announced the arrest of two suspects allegedly linked to the killing, identified as Olivia Patrick, 31, and ThankGod Mourice, 25, who were apprehended at the scene shortly after the incident was reported. The case has been transferred to the SCID for further investigation, while efforts continue to locate other suspects who may have fled the scene, with the police urging residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could aid the investigation.
