The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has frozen the Osun State Government’s bank account, citing the prevention of alleged public funds diversion as the reason, and denying any connection to the forthcoming governorship election in the State. In a statement by its head of media and publicity, Dele Oyewale, the anti-graft agency revealed that it has been investigating the Osun State Government since March 2026 over alleged fraudulent management of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds, and allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), totaling approximately N11 billion. Several state officials, including the Accountant General of Osun State, have been questioned as part of this ongoing investigation.

The EFCC initially had no intention of placing a Post No Debit (PND) order on the State’s accounts. However, it detected what it described as “precipitate and unwarranted” movement of funds starting on August 2, 2026. Investigators allegedly observed large, suspicious transfers from government accounts to various corporate entities, which prompted the Commission to freeze the affected accounts to halt further transactions. The Commission emphasized that this decision was made strictly in line with its statutory responsibility to safeguard public resources, asserting that it would not “watch idly while a state government’s account is being pillaged,” and that the action was taken “to save public funds from being looted.” The EFCC also indicated it is monitoring the finances of several other states as part of broader efforts to ensure accountability and transparency, reaffirming its non-partisan stance and commitment to acting in the interest of Nigerians.

However, the EFCC’s action has triggered diverse reactions, particularly against the backdrop of political tension leading up to the State’s governorship election scheduled for August 15. Earlier, Governor Adeleke alleged that the anti-graft agency had frozen the State Government Account without any court order, describing it as an undemocratic act that undermines the Rule of Law. The Osun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Oluwole Jimi-Bada, SAN, further asserted that the EFCC lacks the legal authority to freeze the State’s statutory account, arguing that the laws cited by the Commission do not empower it to restrict access to such an account, despite recognizing the EFCC’s mandate.

Political parties have largely condemned the EFCC’s move.
