Shocking Sight: Armed Islamic Cleric Leads Congregation Amid Soaring Bandit Attacks in Sokoto

A viral video has captured an Islamic cleric openly carrying what appears to be a pump-action firearm while moving with members of his congregation in Sokoto State, Nigeria. The incident, shared on X by D English Alhaji Media, has drawn significant attention and concern amid escalating insecurity and repeated attacks by armed groups in the region.

The footage shows the cleric, dressed in traditional Islamic attire, with the weapon in hand as he walks alongside his congregants. SaharaReporters had previously reported on a series of devastating attacks in the Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where armed bandits simultaneously targeted three communities: Dinawa, Munƙi, and Gidan Dare. These coordinated assaults, which occurred on a Tuesday night during heavy rainfall, resulted in the deaths of at least five people and the abduction of several others. The attackers reportedly exploited the heavy downpour, using it as cover to infiltrate residential areas while residents sought shelter from the rain.

Community sources described the attack on Dinawa as beginning around 10:30 pm, with bandits moving from house to house, stealing valuables and destroying property. One source stated, "They came when the rain was very heavy. People were inside their houses trying to protect themselves from the rain when the bandits started moving from house to house." Another source confirmed the casualties, noting, "Five people were killed. Some others were taken away by the bandits, but we cannot give the exact number yet because many families are still trying to account for their loved ones." In addition to the abductions and killings, the armed groups also rustled cattle and looted valuables in Munƙi and Gidan Dare.
