The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has expressed profound concern over the increasing number of financial crime cases involving individuals who are identified as religious leaders. Speaking at the 2026 Second Council Meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja, an event themed “Shared Sacred Flourishing in Nigeria,” Olukoyede disclosed that the commission’s extensive case files contain numerous instances of alleged financial misconduct by persons described as pastors, imams, and other religious figures. He further revealed that some of these individuals have already been convicted for their crimes and are presently serving jail terms, a situation that has compelled him to critically question the continued use of religious titles as a shield or a primary source of identity when individuals face accusations of criminal conduct.
