Shocking Redemption: Biggest Animated Movie of All Time Bombed in US, Now a Streaming Hit!

The year 2025 commenced with a remarkable achievement in the animation world as the Chinese fantasy adventure, Ne Zha 2, premiered on January 29. This film didn't just break records; it shattered the global box office for an animated movie, amassing over $2.2 billion and outperforming the second-place film, Inside Out 2, by more than $500 million. Its unprecedented financial success made it one of only seven films in history to cross the $2 billion mark, a particularly noteworthy feat for a foreign, animated feature that easily surpassed Hollywood productions financially on a global scale.
Despite its colossal international triumph, Ne Zha 2's journey in the U.S. market presented a contrasting narrative. The film only managed to earn $23.3 million theatrically, experiencing a significant flop, especially with its English release. However, this theatrical underperformance did not reflect a lack of American interest. The animated epic sequel has since found immense success on HBO Max in the U.S., climbing to third place on the platform, surpassed only by Gerard Butler's Greenland and the Best Picture frontrunner One Battle After Another. Its arrival on streaming during the holidays spurred a surge in subscribers eager to experience the film, proving its enduring appeal beyond its initial theatrical run.
The critical and audience reception for Ne Zha 2 has been overwhelmingly positive, with Certified Fresh 91% and Verified Hot 98% scores, indicating widespread agreement that the film lives up to its monumental financial success. Directed once again by Jiaozi, Ne Zha 2 serves as a direct sequel to the 2019 feature, continuing the saga of the titular crown prince of Chinese mythology.
The film's compelling plot unfolds after Ne Zha and Ao Bing's mortal bodies are obliterated by heavenly lightning. To circumvent certain death, they transform into spirits, but this incorporeal state is not sustainable long-term. To prevent their ultimate dissipation, Taiyi intervenes, employing the powerful Seven-colored Precious Lotus to reconstruct their physical forms. This arduous process is neither swift nor simple, leaving their newly forming bodies fragile. As unforeseen obstacles emerge, the duo embarks on a thrilling and perilous journey that could irrevocably alter their destiny.
Ne Zha 2 also boasts a notable English voice cast, bringing renowned talent to its characters. Crystal Lee, known for her role in Record of Ragnarok, shares the spotlight as Ne Zha, while Solo Leveling's Aleks Le voices Ao Bing. Griffin Puatu takes on the role of the titular character during his adolescence. Adding to the star power, Everything Everywhere All At Once Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh lends her voice as Ne Zha's mother. The ensemble cast further includes Vincent Rodriguez III, Christopher Swindle, Kari Wahlgren, Daniel Riordan, and William Utay, among others.
Ne Zha 2 is currently available for streaming on HBO Max, allowing audiences to dive into its richly animated world. The film is classified as an Animation Fantasy Adventure, with a runtime of 144 minutes, and was directed by Yang Yu with writing credits attributed to Yang Yu, Zhonglin Xu, and Xixing Lu.
