SHOCKER: Sebastian Stan Ditching Marvel for Key DC Role in 'The Batman: Part II'?

Matt Reeves' highly anticipated sequel, "The Batman: Part II," is generating significant buzz with reports of new casting additions, potentially expanding its compelling ensemble. Following news of Scarlett Johansson's rumored involvement, Deadline now reports that Sebastian Stan is in talks to join the DC sequel in an undisclosed role. If these deals finalize, Stan would star alongside Robert Pattinson, who is slated to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne in Reeves’ distinctive 'Elseworlds' take on Gotham, a city renowned for its crime-ridden, noir atmosphere. While Warner Bros. and DC Studios have refrained from commenting on these casting developments, the timeline aligns with expectations, as production for "The Batman: Part II" is projected to commence this spring, targeting a theatrical release date of October 1, 2027.
The original "The Batman" proved to be a critical and commercial triumph for Warner Bros., particularly during a challenging post-pandemic period. Despite its release coinciding with the studio's controversial day-and-date HBO Max strategy, the film garnered an impressive $369.3 million domestically and a substantial $772 million worldwide. This success unequivocally demonstrated a strong audience appetite for a darker, more character-driven portrayal of the iconic Caped Crusader.
Critics widely lauded "The Batman" for its unique approach to the DC universe. Collider's review highlighted the film's innovative choice to position Gotham City itself as the central protagonist. Director Matt Reeves skillfully foregrounded themes of corruption, pervasive fear, and moral decay within the city's fabric, even before fully focusing on Batman. Robert Pattinson’s interpretation of Bruce Wayne was particularly noted for its emotional rawness, depicting a still-forming vigilante whose methods of instilling fear might inadvertently exacerbate Gotham's systemic problems rather than resolve them. The film masterfully leaned into the detective noir genre, drawing comparisons to "Se7en" through its intricate, Riddler-driven mystery, and deliberately emphasized moral ambiguities over conventional heroic tropes.
Many consider Reeves' "The Batman" to be the finest iteration of the character since "The Dark Knight," largely due to its captivatingly rich world-building that successfully reinvigorates characters familiar to audiences. Reeves' direction prioritizes the shadowy aspects of Gotham, crafting a city that feels alive and is presented in a way previously unseen on screen. Rather than redefining Batman, the film offers a fresh perspective on his narrative, delving into the darkness from which the hero emerged, a thematic choice that profoundly differentiates it from many predecessors. "The Batman" (released March 4, 2022, with a runtime of 176 minutes) is currently available for streaming on HBO Max and features Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/The Batman and Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle, with Matt Reeves co-writing with Peter Craig, Bob Kane, and Bill Finger.
