Scout Motors Unveils Visionary 'Spirit of ’26' Concept for America's Quarter-Millennium!
Scout Motors commemorates America’s 250th anniversary with the Traveler Spirit of ’26 Concept, an all-electric SUV inspired by the classic 1976 International Harvester Scout II Spirit of ’76. This modern rendition features distinctive red, white, and blue styling reminiscent of its bicentennial predecessor. While not a production model, it hints at future design possibilities for Scout's upcoming vehicles.
Scout Motors has unveiled the Traveler Spirit of ’26 Concept, a striking tribute designed to mark America’s 250th anniversary. This modern concept revives the iconic style of the original International Harvester Scout II Spirit of ’76, paying homage to a significant moment in the nation's history and Scout's own heritage, despite the brand's long hiatus and its loose ties to the original International Harvester.
Fifty years prior, in 1976, International Harvester joined in the excitement of America’s bicentennial with its own special models. Among these were 17 1976 Scout Travelers and Traveltops, specifically built to support the U.S. Ski Team during their preparations for the Winter Olympic Games that year. These specialized Scouts were equipped with practical features such as winches, roof-mounted ski racks, and a powerful 345-cubic-inch V-8 engine, paired with an A727 three-speed automatic transmission and a two-speed transfer case for four-wheel drive. What truly distinguished them were their Winter White finish, accented with unique red and blue bodyside stripes and the prominent U.S. Ski Team logos displayed on their front fenders.
The distinctive design of these Ski Team Scouts was subsequently adapted for the 1976 Scout Spirit of ’76 trucks. These models featured the same red and blue stripe package on a Winter White body, but without the Ski Team fender logos. The interior boasted a Wedgwood Blue scheme, complemented by a matching roll bar, a denim Safari soft top, and Rallye wheels. Initially, the Spirit of ’76 option was exclusively offered on 100-inch-wheelbase Scouts equipped with a fabric top. However, its popularity led to an expansion, with a version eventually becoming available for hardtop models with both 100-inch and 118-inch wheelbases, marketed under the 'Patriot' name.
The new Traveler Spirit of ’26 Concept is Scout’s contemporary interpretation of this Americana style. This all-electric Traveler features a modern metallic take on the 1976 Scout’s Winter White paint, aptly named 'White Cap.' Its bodyside striping is a blend of vintage Rallye and Scout graphics, incorporating a unique combine harvester motif cutting through a row of blue stripes just ahead of the red stripe, a subtle nod to Scout’s origins in farm equipment. The overall design emphasizes the classic red and blue colors, completing the patriotic tribute.
While the Spirit of ’26 Concept offers an exciting glimpse into Scout’s future design language, a production version is not anticipated in the immediate future. Scout’s current production targets for the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup remain set for sometime in 2027, with customer deliveries projected to commence in late 2028 for the Traveler and around 2030 for the Terra. Nonetheless, there is hope that elements of this distinctive stripe design may be offered as an option on the production Scout Traveler, even if a full red, white, and blue tribute to America’s 250th does not become a standard offering.
