Scarlett Johansson Shocks Fans, Joins Mike Flanagan for 'Radical' Exorcist Remake!

Renowned horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan is set to revitalize "The Exorcist" franchise, with acclaimed actress Scarlett Johansson confirmed to take on the lead role in his new film. This marks a significant development for the long-running horror series, especially in the wake of "The Exorcist: Believer" which disappointed both critics and audiences upon its release in 2023.
Flanagan expressed his enthusiasm for Johansson's casting, stating, "Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her join this Exorcist film." While primarily known for major blockbusters, including her recent box office success with "Jurassic World: Rebirth" which incorporated strong horror elements, Johansson's forays into the horror genre are relatively rare. Her previous horror roles include the giant-arachnid horror comedy "Eight Legged Freaks" as a teenager and her critically acclaimed performance as a man-hunting alien in Jonathan Glazer's minimalist science fiction chiller "Under the Skin" in 2013. Flanagan's upcoming film is described as a "radical" new take on the universe established by the original 1973 film, though specific plot details remain scarce.
The foundational film of the franchise, "The Exorcist," directed by William Friedkin and written by William Peter Blatty, premiered in 1973. It famously centered on the demonic possession of a young girl, Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair), and the desperate efforts of two priests, Father Merrin (Max von Sydow) and Father Karras (Jason Miller), to perform the titular exorcism. A massive critical and financial success, "The Exorcist" made history as the first horror film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards and is still widely regarded as one of the most terrifying motion pictures ever made.
Despite its iconic status, the franchise has struggled to replicate the original's success. "Exorcist II: The Heretic" was met with derision in 1977, and attempts to create a prequel in the early 2000s resulted in two poorly received films. Even "The Exorcist: Believer," which brought back Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair and was directed by David Gordon Green (who successfully revived the "Halloween" franchise), failed to resonate with audiences and critics. Notably, only "The Exorcist III," written and directed by Blatty himself, has managed to break the perceived curse of the sequels and achieve a significant cult following.
Mike Flanagan has swiftly established himself as one of the modern masters of on-screen horror. His acclaimed body of work includes a string of successful Netflix horror miniseries such as "The Haunting of Hill House," "Midnight Mass," and "The Fall of the House of Usher." He has also expertly adapted several Stephen King works for the screen, including "Gerald's Game," "Doctor Sleep," and "The Life of Chuck." His upcoming projects include showrunning a new series based on King's "Carrie."
Flanagan's new "Exorcist" film is currently in development, and a release date has yet to be announced. Fans and horror enthusiasts are encouraged to stay tuned for future updates on this highly anticipated installment to the venerable horror series.
